So what do you guys think? Do you think Mice and Rats were actually hated by larger herbivores because they had no reason NOT to form alliances and communities with larger predators who couldn't sustain themselves by eating them and so Rodents were literally a constant threat or undermining or allowing large predators into your communities?

>lots of grumpy writefriends in one tiny room
Excellent.

You're probably wondering why I gathered you here today.

The idea is to get gather some of your thoughts on the process of writing and possibly attempt to synthesise some common concepts regarding writing, self-improvement.

The aim is to put together a small pack sometime in the future with some meaningful advice and tips for beginners; hopefully something marginally more useful than "just start writing greentexts bro" we often see offered as the only counsel to trying to start contributing.

Let's get started with a few simple simple questions as a starting point for the exchange of ideas

>Do you consider yourself a successful writefriend? (inb4 I'm the worst). We all know one can never have enough (yous) and kudos, but what's your feeling all in all?

>What is your most popular work? Is it also your favourite? If there's a difference, why do you think it occured? If not, what do you think made your work popular?

>Have you written prose before? For how long? Have you ever educated yourself on the art of writing, be it formal courses, books or reaching for professional help?

>Are there any books/guides/online courses you can recommend?

>There is a reason why you write. What is important for you? Do you want to tell a story? Share your own experiences? Entertainment? What is your motivator?

>Do you feel your writing has improved? How? Why? If you feel you've made little to no improvement, why do you think this happened?

>How do you identify faults in your writing? Self-reflection? Feedback? Critique requests? Other? How useful do you think they are compared to each other?

I do have a number of other questions in my mind, but this will have to do to start the chat. If you have anything other to add or advice to give, please feel free to do so!

>I like to think that Zootopia has a problem with rodent squatters
I remember early in the threads we were theorising that the larger animals were paid more than smaller ones because they took more resources to feed and they could provide more labor.
I later thought, "Hey, I've never rolled a zoosona. If I were to get a rodent or some other minuscule creature, I could feasibly live for free under an elephant roommate because my cost of living would be so inexpensive in comparison."
It's an interesting idea.

Excellent idea, anon.

Mudlark here.
>Do you consider yourself successful writefriend?
Yes. Even though few people know me, I base my success off of what I learn through writing each story. Basing your worth off of the number of (you)'s you get is dangerous and will most likely lead to intense frustration. As long as I'm trying something new, I'm satisfied.
>What is your most popular work? Is it also your favorite...
Technically, my most popular work is a story I started over a year ago titled "Hunted." I stopped writing it after a while because it ended up being a way bigger story than I could handle at the time, but I've always felt the pull to go back to writing it. I would say that it's my favorite story simply due to the subject matter.
But as far as stuff I've written recently, I think Drunk Bogo is my most popular. It was a comfy fic requested by an anon, and it was the first comfy fic I've ever written.
>Have you written prose before?
I'm a creative writing major, and I've been writing for almost three years. I've taken multiple classes in literary journalism, fiction, and nonfiction.
>Are there any books/guides/online courses you recommend?
Yes! Stephen King has a great book called "On Writing," and it's cheap on Amazon. He's got some good exercises and advice in there. Otherwise, you should just read as much as possible--it's one of the easiest ways to learn to write. Some personal favorite books of mine are "Saint Lucy's Home for Girls Raised by Wolves" by Karen Russell, "Firestarter" by Stephen King, literally anything written by George Saunders (I do recommend either "Civilwarland In Bad Decline" or "Tenth of December" out of everything he has), and "Perdido Street Station" by China Mieville.
ALWAYS try to take something away from every book you read.

>There is a reason you write
I write to inspire others as well as myself. The act of writing is intimate--you put a piece of yourself on the page no matter what the subject is, and it hurts when people dismiss it. I felt that way a lot when I first started, and I know it drives a lot of people away from writing. I want to get good enough to inspire others to keep pushing forward with whatever they're doing.
>Do you feel your writing has improved?
Massively. However, I do feel there is a huge gap between the writing I do outside /ztg/ and the writing I do for the threads. Even so, I do think that my understanding of Zootopia's characters has grown.
>How do you identify faults in your writing?
Feedback and self-reflection, but equally balanced between the two. Too much feedback transforms the story from the original idea, and too much self-reflection leads to paranoia and a trash bin full of stories that really weren't as bad as you thought they were.

I hope this helped.

>Do you consider yourself a successful writefriend? (inb4 I'm the worst). We all know one can never have enough (yous) and kudos, but what's your feeling all in all?

Half and half. I'm still very new to the fandom, but the people who like me seem to really like me, and a couple bigger names in the community have noticed me. That being said, I did once post a piece so bad that it made anon question whether there was any good cc's left. I don't expect to ever be a true household name, as I arrived very late in the 'dom, but- wait is this just interview anon all over again? You can't catch me that easily!

>What is your most popular work? Is it also your favourite? If there's a difference, why do you think it occured? If not, what do you think made your work popular?

By sheer views, it's The Pack Goes Camping. My favorite is Forbidden Flesh though, which was my first posted work. It never got a shill here, and was just kind of a weird world building fic, which are my personal favorite, but also not greatly appreciated by the world in general. Also tPgC has shipping, and it's previous work had lewd, which is popular here.

>Have you written prose before? For how long? Have you ever educated yourself on the art of writing, be it formal courses, books or reaching for professional help?

I have written since I was six. I've taken both prose and professional writing classes all through my education, including some college level stuff.

>Are there any books/guides/online courses you can recommend?

The only resource I've ever used has been The Art of Style, which is just a grammar textbook. I really don't use other resources, online or otherwise.

>There is a reason why you write. What is important for you? Do you want to tell a story? Share your own experiences? Entertainment? What is your motivator?

I have a bunch of cool ideas that I'm constantly half forming in my mind, then forgetting about. Writing is a way for me to be able to revist them without having to have a perfect memory. My first GF used to steal my notebooks that I'd write stuff in and that showed me that other people were interested in the stuff that I wrote as well. So I still write mostly for me, but since that and video editing are my only two developed artistic abilities, I can now use it to make stuff for people. I'm basically a soft ball of squishy though, so comfy is where I tend to live.

>Do you feel your writing has improved? How? Why? If you feel you've made little to no improvement, why do you think this happened?

I don't think it has improved during the month I've been writing here, but that's because 1. a month. and 2. ztg is fond of being bipolar and memeing, so something is either pure light coalesced into a single shining star, or such drek that the author should kys. You don't get a lot of fufilling commentary from online communities in general, and writing a long thought out review of my work isn't why you were reading it anyway. Chicken, meet egg.

>>Do you consider yourself a successful writefriend? (inb4 I'm the worst). We all know one can never have enough (yous) and kudos, but what's your feeling all in all?
I'm more of a drawer than a writer, but I put effort in both. However, since I write so little (compared to drawing), I am still a novice in this art. Less effort leads to less content, so, as a writer, I'm not very successful.
Writing will attract less (You)s than drawing, this is a sad truth. What I can say is to grit your teeth and continue. Big writers and big drawers are both held in high regard in the threads.
But I'm probably not the best for this, since I am in the peculiar position where I can draw mix drawing and writing.
>>What is your most popular work? Is it also your favourite? If there's a difference, why do you think it occured? If not, what do you think made your work popular?
I found that The cold outside (a fic about the little hustlers and Finnick) and Remembrance (a fic about a rambucous, young mammal) were the most talked about in the threads. However the one with the most views is the Blueberry effect.
The first two are actually part of my favourites, since in those I was able to express everything I needed to say, they came out really well (compared to my other works). For the latter, eeeeh, I need to finish that before giving a final judgement.
>>Have you written prose before? For how long? Have you ever educated yourself on the art of writing, be it formal courses, books or reaching for professional help?
Nope, just read a lot of books in general.
>>Are there any books/guides/online courses you can recommend?

>How do you identify faults in your writing? Self-reflection? Feedback? Critique requests? Other? How useful do you think they are compared to each other?

I trust my gut, probably too much, if something is hard to say outloud, it's going to be awkward to read. If I'm not 100% sold on something, then I highlight it and revise it, even if it's a 99% sold. I usually have other people look at my work in two separate passes, a conceptual pass, which examines if the plot and characterization itself is solid, and if I need to add scenes, remove scenes, reexamine the basic structure of the work, all the high brow stuff that gives a work a feel and a purpose. Then I have a pedantic pass, which is grammar, and typos and word flow. Getting someone who isn't you to look at, and be honest, about your work is 100% necesarry for me to release a good piece. I'm trying to get better at surprise, tension, and comedy, and you get so emotionally distant from your piece so quickly, that there is almost nothing you could write to surprise yourself, because you wrote it. p3/3

I only have two images of my sona, and a random mostly transparent fox I sometimes use, so instead have the first image I ever posted.

>>There is a reason why you write. What is important for you? Do you want to tell a story? Share your own experiences? Entertainment? What is your motivator?
When I write I get really emotional, I cannot distance myself from the emotions I should have reading my piece.
This make writing sometimes really difficult to me. But it is also the reason I write.
If I can transmit the emotion I want, make the reader feel happy, sad, anxious or whatever I want them to feel in that particular piece, I succeeded.
Sadly the little response in the threads makes difficult for me calibrate everything for the next piece. For this Comic's reading are a treasure. I listen to them half for the corrections, half to hear his reaction.
>>Do you feel your writing has improved? How? Why? If you feel you've made little to no improvement, why do you think this happened?
My writing is dry, too much concise, born from the greentexts. In one way it is my style, in the other it is something I need to improve. Also I still make many errors, English is not my first language.
But I've written too little to see something substantial. However some changes are noticeable.
>>How do you identify faults in your writing? Self-reflection? Feedback? Critique requests? Other? How useful do you think they are compared to each other?
I find feedback and critique to be very useful imho. Self-reflection is useful too, but it is difficult to see your own errors.

I dunno, honestly. Some people seem to like my stuff and others don't. Not sure what the average consensus is.

>>What is your most popular work?

By likes on FF, "Judy's Bad Day"

>Is it also your favourite?

No, "The Ol' Zootopia Ballgame" is my fave.

>>Have you written prose before? For how long?

Yes and for most of my writing life.

>Have you ever educated yourself on the art of writing, be it formal courses, books or reaching for professional help?

I have a degree in journalism.

I like telling stories that amuse people.

>What is important for you?

That someone felt their time was well-spent reading something I wrote.

>Do you want to tell a story? Share your own experiences? Entertainment? What is your motivator?

I love to entertain and amuse. I like to make people laugh.

>>Do you feel your writing has improved? How? Why? If you feel you've made little to no improvement, why do you think this happened?

Honestly, I think it has. I write under a variety of different names in different places, but the best feedback I've ever received has been here.

>>How do you identify faults in your writing? Self-reflection? Feedback? Critique requests? Other? How useful do you think they are compared to each other?

>Do you consider yourself a successful writefriend? (inb4 I'm the worst). We all know one can never have enough (yous) and kudos, but what's your feeling all in all?
No. This is more my fault than my fans'; I never have the perseverance to stick to things, which leaves most of my work unfinished.

>What is your most popular work? Is it also your favourite? If there's a difference, why do you think it occured? If not, what do you think made your work popular?

Savage and the Savage is probably my most popular, and the latter chapters are certainly among my better stuff, but Five Years Forward is perhaps the most consistently good thing I've written, so that's my favorite.

>Have you written prose before? For how long? Have you ever educated yourself on the art of writing?

No, not really. I've written a few things for other fandoms, but nothing I'd be proud of.

The only writing education I did was a few high-level courses in high school.

>Are there any books/guides/online courses you can recommend?

Honestly? Online roleplaying is probably where most of my skill comes from.

>There is a reason why you write. What is important for you? Do you want to tell a story? Share your own experiences? Entertainment? What is your motivator?
I want to be noticed. I can't draw, so writing is my next best option. When I hear that someone likes my work, it makes me proud of myself, which is an area I don't have a lot of experience with.

>Do you feel your writing has improved? How? Why? If you feel you've made little to no improvement, why do you think this happened?

Definitely. I think I've been able to structure the larger flow of my writing better, creating arcs for characters and such. Comic's been a big help in this regard.

>How do you identify faults in your writing?

Critique for large problems, self-reflection for small. Technical stuff I can do myself, plot and characters are better with a second eye.

Boney M here. Why? But okay.

>Do you consider yourself a successful writefriend?

I get mentioned even when I haven't done something recently, so I must be doing something right.

>What is your most popular work? Is it also your favourite? If there's a difference, why do you think it occured? If not, what do you think made your work popular?

Most popular? A Rabbit Clan's Fox, easily. My favourite? Ooh, that's tough. Justifications for the de facto collaboration with NAH it turned into? Inadvertent Seduction because I flatter myself into thinking it's helped spurred interest in Best Girl? Only Mostly because trashpanda? Shadowbun because of the weird fugue state that produced it that I one day hope to reach again? Hard to say.

>Have you written prose before? For how long? Have you ever educated yourself on the art of writing, be it formal courses, books or reaching for professional help?

No, all fan stuff.

>Are there any books/guides/online courses you can recommend?

My writing has two major sources: David Eddings' Belgariad, especially the Rivan Codex where he outlined the creation process for the books; and Terry Pratchett's Discworld. I recommend the latter to literally everyone; the former is a tougher sell because it's such formulaic generic high fantasy, but it's deliberately so to give the characterization room to romp.

>There is a reason why you write.

I'm writing these stories in my head anyway. Putting them out onto the internet gives me warm fuzzies from providing entertainment to so many people. I feel like that's worthwhile.

>How do you identify faults in your writing?

Obsessively rereading everything I've written every few weeks and mentally self-flagellating for any flaws I find.

>Have you written prose before? For how long? Have you ever educated yourself on the art of writing?

I'll combine these two, I suppose. Why not? I wrote in the MLP context for a while several years back. This went on for months and months. I stopped doing anything creative for a while, having a lot of personal life difficulties. I think the last thing I did was when I was there visiting my uncle in the West Coast who's since passed away, sadly.

I eventually went to doing a bunch of non-fiction writing in various wikis and the like. I also did a bunch of that before. Broadly, I feel great in doing creative writing stuff again. The details of the Zootopia universe and the opportunities are so vast. I'm overall pretty positive about things.

I've been interested in writing for quite a while. Always liked the more grounded yet detail-packed stuff. Writers such as Michael Crichton come immediately to mind. I've gone through a ton of books in my life. Being a regular kind of Belle from Beauty in the Beast type character. Non-fiction and fiction. Hell, I'm looking at a copy of "The Nixon Defense" on my desk right now.

Academically, I've very much taken writing seriously. I've gone through technical writing classes and specific lab classes. It's been a major thing in terms of working for both the Econ and English offices at my local college-- jobs that I feel pretty proud of. I've talked to people about writing in career terms at some point. I'm not sure, though.

>>What is your most popular work? Is it also your favourite? If there's a difference, why do you think it occurred? If not, what do you think made your work popular?

I'm pretty sure that it's "The Police Saga". I love Wilde-Hopps shipping, and I wanted to do a twist by making them both male. Some great fan-art has helped a ton too:

Story is: http://archiveofourown.org/works/7208780

Honestly, though, I've little idea why some things get popular and some things stay obscure. It hasn't made sense to me even in writing previous stuff. Not sure what to say there.

Just write what you want for the audience that you'd like to reach. Try new things. But don't worry too much.

My favorite stories (plural, if I can) would probably be the whole 'Evergreen' thing about Nick hiding out with the Hopps family because his collar is busted. It's so comfy.. It's popular-ish, so there's that, but I'd adore the series even if only like a handful of people ever saw it.

>Have you written prose before? For how long? Have you ever educated yourself on the art of writing, be it formal courses, books or reaching for professional help?

As I stated before, it's been years and years. Really, the core thing isn't a secret. It's pretty obvious. If you want to write, then read. Read short stories. Read non-fiction. Read other fan-fics. Read news articles. Read.

>There is a reason why you write. What is important for you? Do you want to tell a story? Share your own experiences? Entertainment? What is your motivator?

It's a psychological outlet? I guess I should say so. Wanting to express ideas yet not having a way to do it gets to the point where you just have to let things out. My experiences are broadly pretty positive across all contexts. And that's fantastic.

>Do you feel your writing has improved? How? Why? If you feel you've made little to no improvement, why do you think this happened?

Gosh, I'm really not sure. I'd like to think so? That's more for others to judge.

>How do you identify faults in your writing? Self-reflection? Feedback? Critique requests? Other? How useful do you think they are compared to each other?

I do what I can to get commentary. I'm incredibly self-critical and doubting, but I know that I still have to seek things out. Not just talking to VRbit but other writers.

That's a great metaphor. It normally doesn't matter how deep the water is because the ship floats on the surface no matter how far down the water goes... but if there's a hole in the ship, how far there is to fall suddenly becomes very, very relevant.

>>Do you consider yourself a successful writefriend? (inb4 I'm the worst). We all know one can never have enough (yous) and kudos, but what's your feeling all in all?

Hard to say. I seem to be well known at this point, but often I wonder if it's because of my writing or because of my presence and antics in the threads.
Outside the threads, I seem to do okay. I don't draw the same level of hit counts that the big name writers get, but I still get more than I ever expected when I started out.

>>What is your most popular work? Is it also your favourite? If there's a difference, why do you think it occured? If not, what do you think made your work popular?

Solace seems to be my most popular, with it drawing nearly 1400 hits and brought up the most both in and outside the threads. I'm partly sure it got as big as it did because it was a lewd shipping story, which gain more attention than silly one shots or ongoing mysteries.
Hard to say what's my favorite, but it's probably a draw between Solace and the first Stoutwell story.

>>Have you written prose before? For how long? Have you ever educated yourself on the art of writing, be it formal courses, books or reaching for professional help?

Kinda. I tried a hand at fic writing when I was around 14-15 and it was terrible, so I gave up that hobby for a long time.
The next time I got back to writing was around five years ago when a binge on fantasy reading had me interested in writing my own book, and while I extensively worked out an outline and details on the cast, I never got past the 3rd chapter as I constantly rewrote chunks of everything that bothered me until I eventually set it aside.
Still intend to get back to that work some day.

>>Are there any books/guides/online courses you can recommend?

Not really. Most of what I know I've learned in high school and university, though I have watched a number of Brandon Sanderson's writing lectures on youtube and I'd suggest giving them a watch.

>>There is a reason why you write. What is important for you? Do you want to tell a story? Share your own experiences? Entertainment? What is your motivator?

I have a very active imagination and constantly craft stories all day, every day, to occupy myself during the day-to-day monotony, and sometimes these ideas seem too interesting to jut keep to myself.
At a point I sought to express these ideas in film, but these days I'm content to try and bring them to life in prose instead.

>>Do you feel your writing has improved? How? Why? If you feel you've made little to no improvement, why do you think this happened?

Very much so. I think a big part of it has been thanks to the feedback of people like Comicanon as it has helped me identify what works and what doesn't and then I use that feedback to build on my next piece; hopefully getting sharper with each new short story.

Toga here.
1) Moderately. I don't have a fandom like Pack Street or comics made about anything I've written, but I'm hapy with anybody reading what I write.

2) "A World All Her Own" is definitely my most popular, though my favorite was a pastebin I did called Red of Blues. The difference between the two is one took my just twenty minutes, and the other has taken me several months and is still on-going, even though it has just one little bit left.

3) No, I have not written prose. Did it once for a 10th grade english class and found it to be hideously boring and tedious. My only education in writing were the classes I've taken K-12 and some creative writing in college, but otherwise I'm self-taught because I like TO READ. READING will help you become a better writer and is just asn important as anything else.

4) None come to mind because I haven't read any.

5) I write because it's fun. With regards to fanfiction, I most often write because it's very difficult for me to let go of characters I've grown attached to, so I write fics to prolong my connection to those characters, so to speak. It's like I just want them to be around more.

6) I feel like my writing has improved. Not consistently, though; I still have hit-or-miss fics or ideas. But I feel having an editor to tell you what's wrong and how to fix it goes a LOOONG way towards teaching you to find your own mistakes and apply your own fixes. having someone else to lend their eyes to your story is a tremendous help.

7) Feedback and critiques are what help me. Self-reflection is good but only if you're able to be impartial with yourself, which is something I feel a lot of writers or artists aren't; which is why I value comic's input so much because I still have trouble consistently identifying my own faults and weaknesses. I'll remember them one day and forget them another.

>Do you consider yourself a successful writefriend?
Kneejerk reaction is to say no, but yeah, people tend to enjoy what I write, when I actually write something.

>What is your most popular work?
COLLAR ON/Circumventing the Collar, hands down. It's pretty close to breaking 16k hits at the moment. I don't really have a favorite among what I've written, they're all basically just practice, lessons for me to learn.

>What do you think made your work popular?
No one had done it, and no one HAS done it since. Also, Mead shilled it, so that was pretty great.

>Have you written prose before? For how long?
Off and on since I was a teenager. Most of it was garbage.

>Have you educated yourself on the art of writing?
Not in any formal capacity. I just read a lot and figure out what I like to see and what I don't like to see, stylistically, and go from there.

>Anything you can recommend?
Just read. Read a lot. Read different authors. Shit, read fanfiction, even the mediocre stuff, because that's going to show you what not to do, because specific things will start to piss you off and you won't do that anymore.

>Is there a reason for why you write?
Not particularly. I just have lots of ideas and I like putting them to paper sometimes. It's enjoyable enough but there's no big lofty reason for me. People liking it is a plus. Motivation is the biggest roadblock I face, if I'm honest.

>Do you feel your writing has improved?
Oh, no doubt. I've become more cognizant of sentence structure, varying the words I use, and keeping paragraphs more bite-size. COLLAR ON is incredibly dense and I didn't notice until it was pointed out to me.

>How do you identify faults in your writing?
Critique and editors. Comic's pretty invaluable, but talking with several writers can only help. I freely invite criticism in the comment sections of my stories and that's gotten me some really nice insight. One isn't really more useful than the other; editor help tends to be broader, though.

Be a little more careful with your word choice and proofreading. There was one instance of "close" that got repeated very quickly. The characters worked fine for a fetish piece, and the premise works for that. Consider using a bit more flowery language, and really going into detail about the acts themselves. Add more descriptors all around, it's kind of sterile. It did get me wet, though, so if that's what you're going for, good job.

That's ultimately for you to decide anon. I know you can only do so much with them given the rate at which information is released.

I'm usually the kind of person who loves to gush about their characters (and I still do), but I also know that if I do not only would it give away what I'm going for and therefore cause all interest to be lost, I'd likely lose interest myself if I have nothing to surprise people with.

Serious question: In the entire course of the story, has Remmy EVER been smooth? Has he ever done anything suave or slick?

Literally the only example I can think of is when he countered Marty with that snappy comeback in Wannabite.

Hey there buddies,

I'm sorry if my presence annoys others at times. I don't mean for it to.

There are people who enjoy talking and joking with me and people who enjoy reading it, and I don't want people to feel left out or ignored. I don't want them to feel bad, just like I don't want you all to feel bad.

Some anons have said there are ways to filter out my comments or comments about me; I don't use 4chan X so I don't know how to do this but I would suggest looking there, and if you need help I can try to find out how to do it for you. Otherwise I hope you can enjoy the threads regardless.

>Do you consider yourself a successful writefriend?
To the extent that I've written at least one thing that the thread has enjoyed, yes. With regard to overall output an discipline, no. I've only put out two things that had any real traction and a handful of TT one-shots that didn't go much of anywhere.

>What is your most popular work? Is it also your favourite? If there's a difference, why do you think it occured? If not, what do you think made your work popular?
June Hymn.

Yes, it's my favorite thing I've written for the thread. I think I was able to channel a lot of very real existential anxiety into it and distill it into something positive and comfy. The main idea--a sort of uncertain, young adult "Well, now what?"--was something very much on my mind as I wrote it.

>Have you written prose before? For how long?
I have a degree in philosophy, so not so much fiction as non-fiction.

>Are there any books/guides/online courses you can recommend?
"Letters to a Young Poet" by Rilke is great for cultivating creative self-reflection.

>There is a reason why you write. What is important for you? Do you want to tell a story? Share your own experiences? Entertainment? What is your motivator?
It might sound cheesy, but it's from a sense of fullness of heart and a desire to connect with others. Everyone's hearts are so deeply, desperately their own, teeming with passion and secrets and contradictions to the point that our hearts are even secrets to ourselves. Writing connects us to each other and, in a sense, reveals me to myself.

>Do you feel your writing has improved? How?
I do! It's mostly shown me how far I still have to go, haha.

>How do you identify faults in your writing? Self-reflection? Feedback? Critique requests? Other? How useful do you think they are compared to each other?
It's hard to beat outside critique. Also, just actually trying to write and noting where I struggle tells me a lot about where I need to improve.
