So, Anons. So with the whole COVID lockdown and other stuff that's been going on, I've been reading a lot of Zootopia fanfiction lately.Like, a LOT.Don't judge. So first I started bookmarking the ones I really liked, so I'd remember them. Then I started bookmarking the ones I didn't, so I wouldn't accidentally read them again.Seperated them into folders so I could keep track of which was which. This led to me taking notes in the various bookmarks with my reasons why I liked or didn't like a fic, so I wouldn't forget. Then I realized that I really should organize this shit better, so I started compiling it all together. So those various bookmarks and notes turned into full-on fan fiction reviews, and I realized that I was sitting on quite a few of them. And I know other Anons read fanfic...So here's my compilation of honest Zootopia fan fiction reviews. And maybe this terrible thing I've done to myself can help some of you.
>>31831031Guardian Blue (series) by Alps_Sarsishttps://archiveofourown.org/series/678305Verdict: My favorite set of Zootopia fan fics to date. Highly, HIGHLY recommended.Multiple stories and entire story seasons follow the adventures of Nick and Judy after the events of the movie. Well-written, often funny, and featuring moments of brilliant triumph contrasted with amazing drama and emotions. A true inspiration in the fandom.Note: AO3 lists the stories somewhat out of order - the first ones are all fine, and should be read in the order in which they appear, but later on, Season 3 should actually be read last, after Sheepless in New Reynard.Unfinished but actively ongoing, and more than enough completed story arcs to make for great reading.
>>31831049Guardian Blue - After Dark by Alps_Sarsishttps://archiveofourown.org/series/951816Verdict: Actually pretty great, for all that it's porn. Just as well-written as Guardian Blue. These are the adult stories taking place in the Guardian Blue universe. Recommended reading after Guardian Blue.Part 1, Taboo, explores Nick and Judy's first time after they enter into a relationship, and Part 2, Gratitude, explores Jack and Skye's first time, which takes place after the events of Guardian Blue: Season 1.
>>31831064Sleepless Nights, by BearlyThereUpstairshttps://archiveofourown.org/works/13286955Verdict: Tricks you into thinking it's good, then crushes all your hopes and dreams. It's not obvious at first, but the world is a nightmarish, dystopian hell version of Zootopia, where open anti-predator bigotry is practiced. It's so bad that predators are regularly denied medical care, simply left bleeding out in the E.R. or otherwise not treated. Doctors will literally just let predator patients die rather than give them treatment. All positions of power and authority are held by prey species, and abuse runs rampant - even the top-ranking staff member of the ZPD Academy torments, abuses, and exploits predator cadets. This has given Nick severe PTSD and more issues than National Geographic, resulting in one of the most neurotic versions of the character I've ever seen.Oh, and open cooperation between the ZPD and the mob, courtesy of an arrangement called the Truce, results in Bogo being Mr. Big's bitch.
First pic, Traveon
>>31831081Wine Coolers, by Done_In_5https://archiveofourown.org/works/6791152Verdict: A good, mature fic in which the characters admit their feelings and communicate like actual adults.Mutual respect, consent, and open communication is the order of the day for this short, easy fic. No unnecessary drama or confusion, no endless angst, just simple WildeHopps. And although Nick is still a bit unsure of himself, Judy doesn't allow that shit to fly.Unfortunately this is the author's only Zootopian work - I'd like to see more by them.
>>31831099A Better Life, by HerAld_90https://archiveofourown.org/works/7028632Verdict: Another "let's abuse the hell out of Nick and Judy" fic, with Platonic Life Partnership thrown in just for good measure.A serial killer from 30-odd years ago makes a reappearance in Zootopia, specifically just to fuck with Nick, because that's good for some lulz. Fellow officers in the ZPD turn violently corrupt because reasons (there's some hand-wavy "explanation" about larger predators being upset about the Mammal Inclusion Initiative, but honestly, it really doesn't hold water), injuring Nick and Judy so badly that they retire from the ZPD (Nick is outright maimed).
>>31831120Winter Snuggles 1: Cuddles and Comfort, by Boney_Mhttps://archiveofourown.org/works/6933031andWinter Snuggles 2: Desire and Dependence, also by Boney_Mhttps://archiveofourown.org/works/7626403Verdict: The fluffiest WildeHopps fics on the internet. This is the gold standard of fluff that all other fluff fics aspire to. Young up-and-coming fluff fics dream of being this fluffy when they grow up, teenage fluff fics angst and blog post over not being as fluffy as these, and older fluff fics gossip and reminisce over drinks about how fluffy these fics were.
Which CCs are into cub and where can I contact them for commissions?
>>31831134Finding Our Way (series) by Falkehttps://archiveofourown.org/series/476992Verdict: This whole series is fic junk food - empty calories, not particularly great, but not bad enough to stop idly munching on.Two main things are explored in this series: Nick and Judy's PTSD, nightmares, and panic attacks, and a disgruntled ex-energy employee turned psuedo-terrorist. The pair struggle to stop a series of escalating attacks masterminded by the ex-employee, while dealing with their own stress and trauma-induced issues along the way.
>>31831150Apologies by Erasmusmaushttps://archiveofourown.org/works/7171787Verdict: Not terrible. Stumbles in a few places, but overall worth reading. An AU in which Nick goes looking for Judy after the press conference. The author changes things around so the events of the movie - the discovery that it's Nighthowlers making mammals go savage, Judy's return to Zootopia with Nick, Bellwether's arrest - all still happen, but differently. It's all fairly plausible and the writing's not bad, but it is unfinished and on hiatus since May 2017.This fic also uses the idea of something called The Call - an involuntary yell that someone makes when they find their soulmate. This idea was originally put forward during a worldbuilding session in /ZTG/ on 4chan, and it's interesting to see it explored a little here.
>>31831165Eight Years Apart by chaucer345https://archiveofourown.org/works/19767583Verdict: I liked this a lot more than I expected to - shows a great deal of potential.Nick and Judy get sent back into time by a kitsune and given the chance to re-do their early lives - to alter history, save lives, and change outcomes. But they quickly discover that tampering with the past comes with a price...Note: Although I liked this much more than expected, the author has 5 other works on AO3, all unfinished, and all on hiatus. This does not bode well for them ever finishing this one - or any of them, really, as they show a strong tendency to bounce distractedly from topic to topic.
>>31831180Judy and Nick's Tales by sirtalenhttps://archiveofourown.org/series/698916Verdict: Not too bad at all.It starts out making you think it's just another "partner injured in the line of duty" fic series, then goes in a bit of a different direction by focusing heavily on the recovery and healing - both physical and emotional - rather than on the injury, angst, or emotional turmoil following a serious injury. The pair supports one another as they pick up the pieces and get back to their lives, and although they do stumble along the way, it's completely realistic, well-handled, and the pair doesn't fall - they just stumble, help one another steady on, and get back to it.Pretty uplifting, when it's all said and done.Second part is the best, IMO - the first part simply sets it up.
>>31831195The Days That Followed by Selaxeshttps://archiveofourown.org/series/919083Verdict: Pretty much WildeHopps fluff, but it's pretty good fluff, honestly.Okay, that's not quite true. The first part of the series is solid fluff, sure, but the second and then the third move steadily into more serious, deeper waters. The shift was gradual enough - like easing into a hot bath - that I didn't mind the difference in tone between the first and the later works. It's worth mentioning that Selaxes has done a number of other good Zootopia works, like Birthright(https://archiveofourown.org/works/13186110) which although it went on hiatus and then finally came back and finished with a rushed ending, was actually quite good, overall. Selaxes is generally a good writer.
>>31831207Foxhollow by Helthehatterhttps://archiveofourown.org/works/7915792Verdict: About average for Zootopia fanfic. Not great, not terrible.A medieval AU in which Nick is a king and Judy is taken as his ward. Characters are "borrowed" from other Disney works as well, resulting in a somewhat off-putting mish-mash of characters and setting. Also, although it's marked as complete, the ending really just...sputters out instead of reaching a finale. The whole thing's just kind of... mediocre, in storytelling as well as writing.
>>31831215The Prey Master by DerekSkyshadowhttps://archiveofourown.org/works/7960942Verdict: Into the trash it goes.Bad writing with poor word choices, terrible grammar, misplaced punctuation, and misspellings for days. Drifts into near-gibberish and Engrish from time to time - ESL author, maybe?
>>31831225Chronicles of Zootopia by Lavernehttps://archiveofourown.org/series/486182Verdict: Pass on this series. All the works in this series suffer the same couple of problems - an author who struggles with professional English and who couldn't be bothered to pay close attention to the source material (Or remain faithful to it, anyway). I'd say they were flighty and easily distracted, but there's 241,000 words here. ADHD perhaps? It does have that sloppy, almost frantic feel to it.
>>31831031Nothing to contribute but please keep going, I need more recommendations
>>31831248Oh, I'm just getting started. Like I said, I've been reading a LOT of fanfic.>>3183123910-97 by Samur_Umlalhttps://archiveofourown.org/works/6854437Verdict: Better than it seems, somehow?Well written, but dark. Brutal violence, terrible prejudice, open specism, intimidation, fear and hatred are all out on open display. The saving grace is that somehow, it manages this without being edgy, coming across as more gritty and almost noire. It's still recognizably Zootopia, not Zoodystopia - it's just a bit uglier, with scars and a rough voice from chain-smoking.
>>31831207Birthright was really, really bad, though. Teaming up with Sophie was a pretty goddamn terrible move.
>>31831262The Fire Triangle by MercMartenhttps://archiveofourown.org/series/831267orhttps://www.fanfiction.net/s/12665692/1/The-Fire-Triangle-Prologue-Escape-From-Zoo-YorkVerdict: Good, but enormously complex in a way that defies simple categorization.A massive, sprawling Zootopia fanfiction epic (687,000 words and counting). Well-written, with great character interaction, it takes a more serious approach to the Zootopia universe. A bit darker than canon, with the specisim dialed up to eleven, this fic dances on the edge of dystopian grimdark without ever quite tipping over all the way.
>>31831271Hey, feel free to do your own reviews, eh? These are my opinions - nothing more, nothing less. Nothing is objectively "good" or "bad" - it's all subjective.>>31831285The Fire Triangle by MercMartenhttps://archiveofourown.org/series/831267orhttps://www.fanfiction.net/s/12665692/1/The-Fire-Triangle-Prologue-Escape-From-Zoo-YorkVerdict: Good, but enormously complex in a way that defies simple categorization.A massive, sprawling Zootopia fanfiction epic (687,000 words and counting). Well-written, with great character interaction, it takes a more serious approach to the Zootopia universe. A bit darker than canon, with the specisim dialed up to eleven, this fic dances on the edge of dystopian grimdark without ever quite tipping over all the way.
>>31831299The Three Rules for Foxes by she_dies_at_the_endhttps://archiveofourown.org/works/23827309Verdict: Not bad, although it kind of doesn't really GO anywhere.A medieval/fantasy AU in which Nick is fae, an immortal being of myth, legend, and Old Magic, and Judy is the farmer's daughter who befriends him.
>>31831325The Many Adventures of St. Zoo High by Helthehatterhttps://archiveofourown.org/works/7994989Verdict: I can't believe I read enough of this to review it. I feel so dirty...A High School AU (ugh!) in which the author squashes a bunch of the character's ages closer together so they can all go to the same school, because drama. A teen-oriented story written by a teen, for teen readers, featuring pretty much the whole cast from the movie as teens, as well as the author's angsty self-insert teen character (whom teen Gazelle falls madly in love with, of course). The quality of writing is exactly what you'd expect given the age demographic, and the entire plot revolves around the various character's love lives / love interests and the various problems therein, making the whole thing just as teeth-clenchingly uncomfortable as you'd expect.
>>31831349Shadowbun: Transformations by Boney_Mhttps://archiveofourown.org/works/7749013Verdict: Short and a little rushed, but all in all, not too bad.Shadowrun crossed with Zootopia. Judy is a corporate cop, unappreciated and overlooked, who contacts an illegal street doc (Nick) looking for an edge over her corporate colleagues to gain recognition and respect.Reads like a single Shadowrun game session: self-contained and complete, though a bit compressed. And at just over 14,000 words, it's easy to get through in a single sitting.
>>31831375Take A Stand by Crewefoxhttps://archiveofourown.org/works/14737146Verdict: Ehhhhhh, combined with that so-so hand waggle.Comes up a little short of being outright bad, but it's a Disney-cameo-heavy crossover between Zootopia and Robin Hood that I just really couldn't get into all that much. (The fanart mixed throughout is pretty good, though). It comes across as a bit trite and contrived, and pretty much goes right down the checklist of Zootopia fanfiction tropes from Shitposts, and that reminds me - I haven't reviewed that yet!
>>31831299Nah Birthright is pretty objectively bad
>>31831389Zootopia: The Shitposts by Lothar_Hexhttps://archiveofourown.org/works/11046789Verdict: Perfect. Absolutely perfect. It's the Portal of Zootopia fan fiction. Written for experienced (jaded) readers of Zootopia fanfic, this meta-fic hilariously disassembles the entire genre, taking the absolute piss out of the common tropes (over)used in the fandom. A delightful afternoon read and a great change of pace from all the usual, loaded with sharp humor, lampshade hangings, callouts, and great turns of phrase.
Do you think Jenny slate ever RPs as a prey when white guys fuck her?
>>31831410 (part 1)Take A Stand (series) by Garouge-FauxPart 1 - Take A Stand: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/12105029/1/Take-A-StandPart 2 - Star Of Ceartais: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/12439999/1/Take-A-Stand-Star-Of-CeartaisPart 3 - The Broken Mirror: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/12973009/1/Take-A-Stand-The-Broken-MirrorVerdict: I could only make it to Chapter 12 of Part 2 before I gave up, but your milage may vary.A crossover between Zootopia and Robin Hood, in a world with with super powers. If you're rolling your eyes at this point, I'm right there with you. The author's youth, inexperience, and insecurity makes itself _clearly_ known all throughout their writing.
>>31831410 (part 2)Part 1: Nick's mom is the founder of the Maid Marian Gang, a group of Zootopian vigilantes who take down criminals during a period of civil unrest in Zootopia over interspecies couples, then give the money to the poor. (Nick's dad is The Hood, and someone's OC bear character is Little John.) Nick finds out he has a daughter thanks to her mom tracking Nick down because she's dying, so Nick and Judy agree to adopt the kit. In the meantime, the crisis in Zootopia over inter couples reaches a head, causing the pair (as an inter couple themselves) to take a stand against the hate, hence this part's title. Their decision splits Zootopia and Judy's family apart, and Judy becomes pregnant with Nick's magical hybrid baby.Part 2: An earthquake and tsunami strike Zootopia, pretty well wrecking it's shit. Magical Hybrid Baby and her new girlfriend are nearly killed, only to be saved by an experimental medical treatment given to them by a doctor friend who is also Iron Man (Woman). They develop superpowers because Nanomachines, son! and it was shortly after this point that I decided I was done. Oh, and Nick is a massive raging asshole now, because reasons? He's so far out of line on multiple occasions that there's no possible way he'd still have a job with the ZPD, but the Bogo in this universe is too much of a pussy to fire him.Part 3: Go for it, and good luck. I couldn't make it this far.
>>31831484The Mistress by MysteryGirl22https://archiveofourown.org/works/11887626Verdict: Toxic waste. This fic needs to be sealed in a leak-proof container and stored in a safe disposal site so future generations won't be contaminated.Nick's exes start turning up murdered and mutilated with messages for Nick left at the scenes, but the obvious conflict of interest doesn't get him taken off the case because someone hacks Bogo's intercom (eyeroll) and tells Bogo to keep Nick on the case or Bad Things will happen. Judy starts acting wierd after giving birth to her and Nick's kit (because this fic needed Magical Hybrid Baby on top of everything else), and speciest cops openly mock, belittle, harass, and even injure Nick (who is a sergeant and detective at this point). The author's complete ignorance of the most basic police procedures as well as simple common sense are placed on vivid display as:1: No one investigates how Bogo's intercom was hacked, or how someone spoke through it from outside the precinct.2: No one places a Tap & Trace on Nick's phone, despite the murderer calling him constantly to gloat. Yes, everyone knows about this. No, no one even suggests it, or anything like it.3: No one calls the police on a mammal that collects the skins and furs of other mammals, because that's icky and we don't talk about that.4: No one knows what's wrong with Judy after the pregnancy and birth, and the author painfully drags this out over multiple chapters before it's eventually revealed via a friend of a friend of someone's second cousin twice removed who heard from a source about this rare, exotic, and shameful condition called Postpartum Depression, and has anyone looked into that, maybe?I could go on and on, making this list of glaring deficiencies more than twice as long, but why bother? I'm not going to give this fic any more of my time and neither should you.
>>31831512That's it for now. Didn't take as long to post them as I thought it would.
>>31831535Hey man I dug it a lot
>>31831400Tell me why you thought it was bad. I'm interested in hearing your opinion.>>31831535This was a great set of reviews, both thoughtful and insightful. I'm gonna give some of these a read.
>>31831535Thanks for the list. I know it's fanfic and I need to lower my standards but I just can't tolerate anything unless it's well written. Like technically proficient, adverbs under control and all that. Any of these stand out in that regard?
>>31831591>>31831690Cool. These are all just my opinions, originally done just to organize my thoughts. I hope it helps some of you out there make better informed fic decisions, maybe read a fic you wouldn't have otherwise or skip one you can tell you wouldn't like.>>31831708Bear in mind, these are _all_ written by amateurs and it shows. That being said, I found both Guardian Blue and Fire Triangle well-written, with Fire Triangle seeming a little bit more polished and professional of the two.But I thought Guardian Blue was a better _story_.Again, my opinions. Take 'em for what they're worth. Also, why am I suddenly having to solve like, fifteen fucking capchas to post?!? God damn.
>>31831807Too much long posts, get in an argument with someone and you'll know pain.
>>31831207While I don’t think Birthright was particularly bad, I don’t think it was that good either. Mostly average, Nick didn’t feel like his usual smart mouth self (which I consider to be a key trait), The later half felt rushed and the plot never felt consistent. It goes from magical college to taboo romance to save the world without much transition.
>>31830969Judy looks a bit cub-like in this. And I'm OK with that.
>>31831987Reins you in if you get too wordy, eh? Fuckers.God forbid I should post some text instead of shitty memes and reaction images.
>>31831690To start off with, Judy never really faces any obstacles... or even does anything actively on her own, for that matter. She's the most passive character in the story which is ridiculous considering it's Judy Hopps. She goes to magic college, and it turns out she's a prodigy, but no one challenges her for being a rabbit or anything. She's offered an apprenticeship she didn't ask for because she's a prodigy, she discovers how to use the ultimate ward because she's almost-raped and not because she strove for it, Skye just kind of likes Judy and wants her to fuck Nick right off the bat, the story is full of this, especially at the trial of Judy's magical self-defense killing where they just sort of immediately unload overwhelming evidence against the dead guy and his big powerful family does fuckall except seethe about it.Weird fucking about-faces, character-wise. Judy dumps her boyfriend because he cheats on her I think because she won't sleep with him, then the very first thing she does is call Sharla over for casual friendship lesbian sex.It fails pretty hard to establish what kind of era the story is in until they have to explicitly state that Nick is driving a car powered by a fire elemental or something, which is around 7 or more chapters in if I remember right. I'm probably not, it's been quite some time.Sophie and Selaxes pretty much forget to write Nick and Judy falling in love, so they just sort of fall in love for no reason and only then really begin to learn even the first thing about one another. Apparently this is later handwaved as them being soulmates or something; I dropped the story before that happened, it was so boring I couldn't even continue reading to criticize it. This part doesn't surprise me considering how much Sophie hates Nick and won't write him anymore. In the end there was just basically nothing happening for any good reason and it became one of the few stories I've ever dropped out of sheer boredom and disinterest.
>>31831049>>31831064I really loved reading through the first two seasons + accompanying side stories of GB. As you said, it's really impressive just how engaging of a story Sarsis manages to make it, even if his prose isn't incredible-- but I can forgive that entirely for the fact that he's just an amateur writer like the rest of us. At risk of overselling the thing, it might just be my all-time favorite fanfic across any piece of media I've been involved with.I also had the pleasure of speaking to Sarsis once by happenstance, and he says that he has GB planned out for at least six or seven seasons total. Very much looking forward to seeing how it develops over the course of that.
>tfw only long fic i read was partners and i dont even finish it
>>31832045Well, I'm gonna give that one a pass. Thanks for sharing. I'm glad to know what was up with that fic.
>>31832133This footage from Sleazy's house?
>>31832045>Sophie and Selaxes pretty much forget to write Nick and Judy falling in love, so they just sort of fall in love for no reason and only then really begin to learn even the first thing about one another. Apparently this is later handwaved as them being soulmates or somethingYeah, there was this semi-time-travely, reincarnation, fate-ties-them-together kind of thing going on. The whole end, I dunno, quarter? Third? of this fic was the weakest part. It felt really rushed, just slapped together real quick.Personally, I felt that the beginning half or more had some fun character-driven storytelling, but upon looking back, this Anon's right about the lack of real obstacles for Judy and the weird double-standard.And lesbian sex is hot, so that doesn't count.
>>31832174Yes. Now stop watching me taking a bath or at least pay me, It's not a free show so c'mon, give that wallet now.
>>31832084>his prose isn't incredibleI have a little (fucking enormous) side-project going on where I'm editing Guardian Blue to clean up the writing because I love the fic so much. It's just that there's so goddamn much of it, and there's quite a few corrections to be made, honestly...
>>31832210I didn't know Sleazy also "adopted" Duke Weaselton
>>31832287Very kind of you, but flattery won't get you anywhere with me. Now come on and drop the wallet, and your chips.
>>31832287All tubes belong to the yeen now
>>31832045>>31832178If I remember correctly, the last third of the story was written just around the same time Sophie went on that rant how she hated Nick, thought the Zootopia fandom was actually the "Nick Wilde Fandom" where he could do whatever he wanted and not get punished or something, won't ever write him after Birthright, etc. So I assume the rushed parts was them wanting to wash their hands of it.
>>31831535Your autism is great. Now put it all into a pastebin and keep it updated
>>31831708At the risk of jerking off thread CCs specifically, I find Boney (rip) and Falke are both good about this. >>31831150Calls it junk food, but I see a writer who knows how to cook a story down to what it needs, and nothing more, while still packing in a lot of world building flavor. That puts it way ahead of fire triangle or GB for me. Those stories are in just dire need of editing. I wish >>31832230 luck cause he's gonna need it.
>>31831138Most of our CCs that are or were into that either aren't anymore or don't take commissions.Alec does commissions, but had a falling out with someone and doesn't do cub anymore, not sure if the falling out was with someone IN the cub community or someone against cub stuff found out about it and confronted him.Closest thing I can think of that Weaver's drawn is a soft core /ss/ tease back in his MLP days where Applejack goes into heat and seduces Spike, but I don't think he's drawn anything explicit or recent regarding that fetish theme. Also does not do commissions last I checked.I don't think Nemo does commissions even though he's an amazing artist and totally should.I feel like NAH has been dropping hints that he's into it with all the kidnapping and rape vibes he's been putting out with some of his drawings that involve kids, but it's unconfirmed and I don't think he does commissions either.Visiti might. As for writefags, you have...Armasyll, and I think there was someone who wrote some ageplay stuff involving Finnick.
I think it's great the different perspectives, opinions, and advice this thread has brought out. What a comfy way to start a Friday.Catch you Anons later - I've got some fanfic to read.
So who thinks we should send these reviews to the authors, like MysteryGirl22 and DerekSkyshadow?

This film turned me into a furry. Can I unironically sue Disney? You don't put hips like that on a cartoon rabbit without knowing what you're doing.
>>31833648I never leave, really.
>>31833779Bruh did you see the way they made Gazelle swing her hips? They fucking know what they're doing
>>31833779>>31833824They had to lock down a fresh generation, the Robin hood crowd is getting old
>>31833454Is see some good stuff here, and some meh, but I havnt read them all.The only one I really feel is missing would be Orouborus The Endless Cycle by WANMWADThey also made And All That Jazz which is on the list. Its definetly a long one at 70 chapters or so, but it seems you arnt too discouraged by leangth, at least if its good, which I think it is. Only second to Guardian Blue.I will warn you though, because it has a bit of a rushed ending, just thought Id let you know since it is really long.
>ywn hug Judy as she comes home limping with a sprained ankle after a whole day of catching bad guys then wrap it up and spend all night kissing it better K I L L M E
>>31833976Oh, all of WANMWADs stuff is good by the way, except only if youre not too into the Sherlock stuff.
>>31833779I still think they're being pussies for not adding boobs. I'm not saying she should have huge watermelons, but the rack that Byron originally gave her, was fine. >>31833824And we have Shakira to thank for that. She was the one pushing them for more curves.
>>31833150Now that you know, what will you do?
>>31833808I think you'll like Lost Causes and Broken Dreams by eng050599https://archiveofourown.org/works/7939489
>>31833454>>31833648>>31833808Surprise bonus fic review!Lost Causes and Broken Dreams by eng050599https://archiveofourown.org/works/7939489Verdict: Well-written, technically accurate, scientifically grounded, and very, very powerful.Follow along with the doctors and staff of the Honeywell Genetic Counselling Centre in Zootopia as they struggle to make the impossible happen - the live, healthy offspring of parents of different species who cannot normally interbreed. Interspecies couples dream of one day having their own children, and that is the entire purpose of the Centre - but nature is a harsh mistress where incompatable genetics are concerned.
>>31834575Ohh, sounds fun, but probably also very tragic considering its Scientifically Grounded and about hybrids, doesnt bode well.
>
Nick, but he has a babby face(I don't know why I drew this)
>>31834754This is how I'd imagine Meatcanyon to cover zootopia
>>31833215Everyone should be pro-skubNothing better than skub
>>31834623It's what happens when an actual, practicing, real-world scientist in the fields of Molecular Biology, Biochemistry and Genomics takes on the idea of Magical Hybrid Baby in Zootopia. If you want something professionally written, this guy writes for scientific journal articles and textbooks IRL - which is just about the best possible qualification you're going to find in fan fiction.
>>31834982>Everyone should be pro-skubAnd you try to say mongooses aren't evil...
>rightoid 4cuckers eating this corporatist state copaganda
>>31834631Begone, THOT
>>31835210she's so cute
>>31835230anon that's Nick
>>31835239wut
>>31835278that >>31835210 is Nick
>>31835289you're telling me this is nick?
>>31835366no that's Maid Marian.
>>31833824>Bruh did you see the way they made Gazelle swing her hips? They fucking know what they're doingNick had me convinced
>>31835380Anon, I'm going to blow your mind...Have you ever seen Nick and her in the same room?
>>31835366>>31835380This is Nick, tho
>>31835380i give up
>>31833779Oh, they knew good and goddamn well exactly what they were doing.
>>31833779
>>31835135I don't want to tear it down too much, but there's a difference between thoroughly technical writing, and making a piece of fiction engaging. This is closer to former. Not a bad thing, but I'm finding it distracting.
>>31833779>>31835446
>>31833454One recommendation I'll make is a recent fic.Foxes in the burrow by Exewonhttps://archiveofourown.org/works/24488953/chapters/59110171Warning that it is not WildeHopps; hell, I don't think Judy will show up at all since Nick is 14 and this is a Nick/OC Female fic.Nick's mom essentially has them move to Bunnyburrow, both because it is cheaper to live there and to keep Nick away from trouble and hustling. The neighbor across from them is a family of tigers who have a daughter Nick's age named Freya. So far it is a entertaining fic; Nick is a smartass who hasn't completely given into cynicism, the OCs aren't annoying, and there is some building towards overarching character issues they have to deal with.
>>31835517Fan fiction just may not be your thing, Anon, and that's okay. It's not for everyone. You want good story, something like Guardian Blue. You want professional writing, something like Lost Causes and Broken Dreams. There really isn't any perfect middle ground. You won't find anything written to professional, published quality in fan fiction - anyone who writes at that level is writing published works, not fan fiction.I think you really do need to lower your standards - or else just accept that fan fiction's not for you.
>>31835659I know :(I resigned myself to enjoying the sturgeon's-law-of-the-sturgeon's-law of fanfics a long time ago.
This has been really cool - I wasn't expecting to knock out another review off the cuff when I posted these, and the discussion's been amazing.Awesome to see folks found 'em useful.Got stuff to do, so I'll check back in with you all later!
>>31835659damn, that comment destroyed you
>>31835602Sounds like there are so many levels of disconnect with Nick, that it might as well be an OC?
>>31835873Same, it was nice to add stuff to my list as well, but I cant say when Ill be reading it all, currently going through Guardian Blue a second time,Just a quick note, its really cool how Alp forshadows characters and events so well, I had completely forgot about the Coyote they arrested in Part 1, they actually name drop the Hyena girlfriend of his that shows up and wrecks the ZPD in part 3 like 40 chapters later.Anyway, time for bed, night ZTG
Well, I've been let go.Evens take the day off, odds start looking for a new job now.
>>31836309sleep tight bunner
>>31836286You could argue that, but Nick still feels like Nick to me. Just kid version and not completely crushed by the world. Also has his mom to care for him.
>>31836312that sucks anon, I'm sorrytake the day, if you have the means to do so. Look after yourself a bit.
>>31836312Sucks shit anon, can't say anything to comfort that considering situation. Corona?
>>31836312Everybody needs a break, especially when that happens. Relax for today.
>>31836466Yeh, fair. I don't really mind the disconnect as I like any stuff in Zootopia as long as I like the story, but sometimes it feels like a story that keeps referring to the characters name thinking I'm going to leave if they are not Nick Wilde or Judy Hopps.

And oh yeah, it's a dumb sidenote but, I'm kind of having to stop myself from using one artist's work as a point of reference for another that I commissioned. I kind of hate that I'm even thinking of it in the first place. Zootopia anatomy has a specific quirk, though. Most prey mammals have longer legs / arms and most predators have longer torsos, instead. It's pretty much the same as RL anatomy but... Eh. I feel pretty self conscious about correcting.
