TAME collar universe, but prey keep collared violent criminal preds to fulfil a similar role as police dogs or something. I dunno I'm spitballing here. The attack dog preds are kept brutish and violent with hyper-masculinising compliance drugs that sedate their higher faculties. Nick, as an originally intelligent predator now hopped up on these drugs is incredibly resentful that his brain has been taken away from him and all he can do now is hit shit. This is my immediate first idea (my first idea is always shit though - I learned to never start actually writing a story until I've had like three or four ideas on how to open it).

I'm already planning out some Pack Street writefaggotry so I don't have capacity to take on a big novel though, and short-form fiction doesn't really interest me.

I think drop the drugs angle. Nick is just that naturally borderline feral and insanely, defensively ferocious for his mistress. The loyalty thing is more powerful than drugged up slave. Big attraction of foxes is how smart they are, and Nick applies all of that to his mistress worship.

This requires an AU where there is a spectrum of full higher anthro all the way down through semi-evolved anthro/ferals and then true ferals/base animals. In this situation, Judy is top-tier fully evolved anthro and Nick is a step or step & a half below that, but still 'mostly' as intelligent as an anthro, but with regression traits such as emotional control, more feral-like body & stance, wild streak with heightened instincts. In general, Zootopia law doesn't accord them full citizenship rights, but they can be trained and certified for various levels of freedom under proper supervision. Nick is on the higher end of his spectrum, tapped as a law enforcement asset, assigned for life to his handler.

Higher anthros mixing up socially and genetically with "near peers" is frowned upon but grudgingly accepted. The offspring of such can produce viable hybrids and strengthen the overall stock of all tiers. Obviously Nick & Judy can't produce offspring, so her relationship is near-bestiality without technically crossing the line. But, she's happy, Nick's happy, and virtually no other team can compete with them. Occasionally she rents Nick out to stud, under the condition that she can participate.

I conceptualise the story as being one-sided love from Judy for her attack dog, whereas Nick is full of bitterness and resentment and spends his time trying to escape, kill, get even, whatever, before eventually realising that the one-sided love (which he doesn't return) is the best that he's going to get and accepting his station - giving in to the system.

In this conceptualisation, the focus is on Nick reacting to and coping with a truly heinous act by a hideous and morally bankrupt society. The more hideous the act, the more consequential the story and the higher the stakes. So I like the literally-drugged-out-of-your-mind permanent-brain-damage angle because it is a vicious and despicable violation of somebody's rights: a chemical lobotomy of a perceived inferior to produce a slave soldier used to terrorise his own people. Truly evil.

Your concept absolves Zootopian society of too much blame to work in my conceptualisation, unfortunately. Without an overarching plot and theme of society-gone-wrong I think that any story would struggle to make the 'novel' elements (the 'dog-and-handler') situation more than a gimmick. I think if we're going to make Nick into a dog, the story needs to be about him being a dog. If that's the case, I think that the moral bankruptcy angle heightens the stakes (and therefore leads to a better story - at least, in my concept).

Judy would figure in as a sort-of hero antagonist, advocating for Nick and defending him from those who want to euthanize him for his delinquency, but also seeking to keep him subservient for herself and her own enjoyment of her "love" fantasies. A sort of smothering manipulative girlfriend archetype.

I don't think a happy ending works in my concept, but at the same time I think the 1984 type making-peace-with-dystopia isn't exactly what I want either.

I still think it works as a fanfiction though. The tragedy is when the traces of the 'old Nick' that we recognise from the movies shine through the 'new Nick' that this horrible society has created. Because we're already familiar with the 'old Nick' the reader's emotional connection is already there for the author to capitalise on. If the story were it's own thing I don't think it would work as well. Half the fun is taking a character we recognise and twisting him almost beyond that recognition.

But it would have to be done well, or it would just be stupid.

Judy is just kind of there as a hangover. Nick is definitely the main character. At least in my conception of the plot, Judy undergoes almost no character development. The secondary characters would all be filled up by minor characters from the movie - Finnick, the other pred cops, Weaselton, and so on.

I was just spitballing back at you, no offense taken. We have somewhat different visions here, but I don't think they're entirely incompatible. My take is a different social structure, but within that framework there's no reason your take doesn't fit. Everything you suggest can still exist within what I tossed out, but it could largely apply to "most other situations," whereas the Judy-Nick combo could be the nearly unique, maverick exception to how other cross-strata relationships are the norm. Usually drugging out the inferior almost-anthro sub-sects is exactly what happens, at great cost to the 'animal' that gets mind-raped in the process.

Judy & Nick manage to achieve something similar, but she does the mindbreak through will & discipline plus feral-level, instinctual control over Nick using her own libido. Literally enslaves him mind & balls for her own satisfaction, but also forges a working team that surpasses virtually all others. Only teams that use extreme 'usual methods' can compete, and they're broken in their own dystopian and mentally unhealthy ways. Judy would be the rebel-within-the-system, but still a steel-hearted bitch by Real World standards.

It becomes a class warfare structure with a spectrum of species at all developmental levels of animal through high anthro. When I said they're both happy, it doesn't have to be healthy. Judy is just sated & satisfied, Nick enslaved by love, devotion and uncontrollable base instinct.

The variety of moral bankruptcy of many relationships throughout Zootopia & military/police forces can be demonstrated and compared to this one unique example. Nothing about my suggestions is (necessarily) 'perfect' or 'wholesome;' there's a wide range of heavily dystopian Brave New World to explore throughout all of it. The lines between slavery and eugenics and animal are a very blurred spectrum.

Meditate on what we wrote so far and how it can be interwoven, rather than choose only one or the other.

I'd probably hold on to the chemical lobotomy aspect of my concept (not a complete lobotomy in Nick's case - he would be left 'dangerously' mentally intact by Judy as part of her radical methods) but your idea for Judy and Nick's relationship is way better than mine.

I think the story would be about Judy proving herself and Nick finding happiness with Judy in his awful situation. Their happiness is the end-state of the story, in my view, not the beginning of it. Judy would be proud of her equipment and satisfied that she had proven herself, and Nick would come to terms with his new nature and derive contentment for doing his job (protecting his master) well.

Unfortunately I don't see a thematic linkage between Judy and Nick's development (they're not following the same 'path'), and without that I'm kind of stuck on what a good villain would look like in this situation. My two shortcuts for villains is that they either

Judy, indeed, goes through character evolution. Begins as the country bun-kin comes to the Big City to Do Good, as per all the propaganda seen on the TV. Her introduction to Zootopia is sort of like entering Disneyworld by tramline, all colorful & clean & shiny. Upon getting her feet dirty in the ZPD, she discovers that under all that veneer it's more like a Hell-cross between The Road Warrior and Escape From New York. 'Mostly' innocent bun becomes disillusioned quickly.

Oh look, there's a K-9 Division. She gets to work with animals! Yay!

Assigned a fox, in stark contrast to other K-9 units with vastly more feral & huge & dangerous animals. Discovers Nick is very nearly a high anthro, but with typical and serious flaws that will keep him out of that strata forever. She proceeds to train him, using brutal ZPD techniques lifted from various warzones & military methods.

That spark of intelligence makes her back off on the drugs, and develop other methods. Nick's status as a near-anthro allows privileges, such as she can take him home. Training is 24-7 now, and she soon discovers her own bun libido is a powerful training tool. Literally forces Nick to love her, and he's self-aware enough to know how hopeless it is, yet he is helpless before it in general and ... Judy is becoming more jaded & twisted. A terrifying and wonderful mistress that he can only love and obey, pushing him to performance levels that rival the best of the best teams. The drugs are discarded because they reduce his usefulness & performance and she rides his feral power like a live high-voltage line.

Judy transforms from a country hayseed into an industrial dom, Nick is honed to an edge any fox at any tier would envy. At the cost of any shred of free will. He remains trapped in the awareness of what she's done, but he can only love her, defend her, obey her, ever incapable of hating her.

Judy is training him to be more of an Aikido/Krav Maga monster. Incredible reflexes, self control, a dozen levels of deadly that his victims will never see him use. A pure artist of death, or the ability to cripple faster than the eye can see.

The picture that generated this discussion >>20815211 needs to be kept in perspective. Nick looks monstrous in that due to scale. He is still dwarfed by a German Shepard, let alone a timber wolf (other animals in the K-9 Division).

Nick & Judy are training as a specialist team that is incredibly agile beyond comprehension. They can't compete with the brutes in the division ... not directly in strength. Nick's intelligence is high-anthro level, but crippled by 'other flaws.' Psychopathic deadliness, for example. Judy has to learn how to be a psychopath, Nick is born that way. This scenario gives Nick an outlet to channel that as a law enforcement asset, rather than in the criminal underground. Much like Special Ops forces in our Real World military, Nick had the fortune to be put into a government training program at taxpayer expense. And, never forget, he is an expendable asset, merely an 'animal.'

The "villain" here is "the "System," to be obviously tropish. Judy gets eaten by the system in the process of adapting to it, but still remains the rebel within it and somewhat a marginal improvement over most others, much like Decker in the original Blade Runner. Mostly her personal corruption is channeled through her species natural libido biology and she becomes something of a pervert, no matter how well-hidden. Nick is her small solace for selling her soul out. She will never know the comfort of a normal life with a bun husband and bunnlings in a burrow with a white picket fence.

Well, that is the needle to be threaded here. These ideas have interesting aspects, but we're taking a walk in an AU, a rather dystopian one. Basically it's a very brutal inner-city/urban wasteland. This is an exploration of what the characters would be like if their precinct was located in the crime ghetto of a Zootopia populated by 25 million or more citizens, after 50+ years of infrastructure decay. Take the time to watch Onions Green or Brazil for something of an example.

If I see this storyline & related material crop up, I'll try to chime in with something useful. Feel free to use anything posted (of course), in any way that works for you. If Judy starts out very near identical to the canon Judy from the movie, when she is assigned her fox she has to go through a whole discovery process to realize he is a psychopath, then move through the attempt to "rehabilitate" him. Because, of course, she sees his potential.

All the while she is sliding down that path herself. they meet somewhere in between, her idealism shattered and gone like yesterday's virginity, Nick lifted up from depraved beyond all redemption.

By the way, if this theme is explored, the martial-arts level discipline is not only for Nick, he just develops it to a higher, more ruthless degree. Judy is his training partner and would be pushing her training also. All the while, she must learn how to dominate and control Nick so he doesn't control her. The team couldn't work in a law enforcement division if the 'animal' was calling the shots. She has a long way to go to break and incredibly smart and strong-willed asset yet still keep him useful and in top-tier performance. that's why I suggest she explore alternate ways rather than brute force drugs. She could even use the drugs at first but realize they have to be discontinued for maximum success.

The end goal result is stone cold, professional steel, a team such has never been seen before. Built upon Judy's innovation and intelligence and Nicks intelligence plus perfect focus, once it's developed. This is a story of mindbreak and will-against-will, with the prey becoming the mistress of the predator in every way.

By the way, I hate Lethal Weapon and Mel Gibson in that role. He's a fucking assclown in that. Not suggesting at all that is the direction to go.

Or, try to overcome. Implications in some of these posts seem to indicate a failure to succeed completely. I like that thought, a mix of partial success and partial failure with no clear end of struggle.

This is some dark shit. Has potential but will take some craft to pull it off successfully. Okay but seriously, Judy was wearing that god-awful fox-away spray, even while being in uniform. I mean she's representing the government when she's in uniform, and she was wearing that thing. Yet you say that Nick should have been a saint and not react in any negative way towards her for doing that? Seriously, that's just downright insane. No, Nick was not at fault for going off at her, not one bit and the fact that he didn't insult her more is honestly a testament to his character.

Apologies also don't need to be all that cut and dry. A change in demeanor should often times just be enough, actions speak louder than words.

Judy definitely needed to do a direct apology towards Nick, because what she did was a mess to say it lightly.
Gideon also needed to do it because he was a bully who used physical force that ultimately resulted in blood being shed.
Nick saw someone who was being speciest towards him, so he returned that in kind. There's literally no reason for him to apologize for that. But he did change his tune after his bout with Bogo. Nick then refers to Judy as "Officer Hopps" when she steps in the gondola, Nick is acknowledging her as an officer after that. Hell, he even signs up to be her partner despite her still wearing that spray can.
The same thing can be said about Bogo. "You think I'll believe a fox". It's unfortunate that he said that, sure, but whether he gave Nick an apology or not isn't important, what matters is that Bogo's demeanor towards Nick (and Judy too) did change at the end for the better.

Just the idea that we have to apologize at even just the smallest of offenses is too crazy. We'll have to spend every day just apologizing to each other because "whoops I looked at you the wrong way" or "I'm wearing red socks and you hate red socks so now you're insulted" It shouldn't be necessary.

As I said, a lot of Nick's actions weren't exactly unprovoked, and I understand why he acted the way he did, but that still doesn't give him a free pass to be speciest as well. He could have easily pointed out her own attitude as well as her carrying a flask of fox-repellent, but instead made jokes and insults based on her being a rabbit. There are ways to react that don't involve lowering yourself to that level, but Nick did that and he is at fault for that. Neither of them are right in this scenario is what I am trying to say; you could argue that Judy was worse, but that is whataboutism at work. Just like foxes probably hate to be associated with the words "sly" and "skulking", I am sure being compared to a stuffed toy is offensive to a small prey animal that everyone thinks is cute.

Also, apologies may not be cut and dry, and actions do speak louder than words, but clear fucking communication definitely helps. The press conference scene probably could have been avoided had the repellent been brought up earlier and they actually talked about their problems, but they didn't for any number of reasons, including they probably didn't fully trust each other yet. So, to make sure something like that doesn't happen again, it is better for two friends to apologize and talk it out.
