This left the Rats in a rather interesting place. They had long depended on Rabbits as a buffer species between themselves and the surface world. Without them, sustaining the needs of a population would prove difficult. This is where one of the great marvels of the ancient world stemmed from, as necessity breeds innovation so to did it force them to develop a solution. Earlier we mentioned how warrens and tunnels could at times connect and breech into one another, linking new Mischiefs and Clans together as a given warren needed to be expanded. We can't pin point precisely where this phenomenon stemmed from, but the Rats of the era thought it a fantastic idea. The Rats purposely dug deep. Deep into the Earth, far enough to where the goings on of the surface world wouldn't put what they had in mind at risk. Tunnels closer to the surface were always in danger, from other mammals, the elements and the like. Ergo, they did not make for safe means of travel. Once down far enough, the Rats began expanding their tunnel network. Farther and farther than any that had come before it. We do not know precisely how or why so many Clans and Mischiefs went along with the idea, but we suspect it was due to limited resources and ideas of their own, this was largely a supply and food crisis for the collective species with some exceptions.

Caravan trains underground could stretch for miles beneath the earth, marching single file and wheeling their master's goods to all corners of the world. From it, a myriad of Empires were born. This period of time was known among Rats as 'The Great Exchange'.

A new belief however had found traction among the Mischiefs and once word of it spread, it spread like wildfire across the Chittering Way. The Rats refuse to speak of the old religion's name, but accounts recovered from the time of The Black Hunger referred to it only as The Eternal Feast

God, someone give me some brain bleach, there this asshole over at FA and he posted Nobby's and Itty's pics, so I looked at his gallery to see what else he is stealing, and it turns out he commissions zootopia pieces.... VORE zootopia pieces, and even has a short fic of Nick's and Judy's "it's called a hustle sweetheart" moment going sadistically different. I don't know why I clicked on it, I knew that it's going to be disgusting and angsty and as badly and out of character as a fic by a 12 year old... but it was just booringly talentless too... he made Nick a serial murderer (serial predator) who dragged Judy into his "lair". I mean, how little do you have to care about the characters if your setting only works if you make a relatable good guy with troubled past into a straigt out sociopath. It's the perfect example when a loser, without enough fantasy to design his own characters, so he only adopts a fandom because of the appealing character designs, and doesn't care about either the story or the theme of the franchise.
