The animals are NOT direct allegories.
The Zootopian society has their own cartoon-animal stereotypes. Foxes are shifty, sloths are slow, bunnies are cute & meek, etc.

The movie makes the case that stereotypes are bad but not using real-world stereotypes.

You are not going to get bites with that bait.
One of the directors is chief shipper for the pair.

But you are right, they may not get together in the sequel.
That is more of a Third-Movie conclusion. First we need to see the romantic tension escalate during the second movie.
>>
>>89006546

nonono! it's gona be about the struggles of the first interspiece couple in zootopia, and the third movie will be about them adopting a child since they cant have their own.

Much of the story is about setting these stereotypes only to defy them.
That is why Flash turns out to be a speed freak, why the airheaded hippie actually had perfect memory while the elephant could not remember, and why the tiny shrew was the boss of the big scary polar bears, etc.

>>89005786
The message of the film is don't base an assumption as your main perspective on a certain type of person. Example, predators have a predisposition to violence based on ancient history and their biological nature.

The problems I have are two mainly:

1) The flora they used, the blue stuff, it did cause a reaction, so there is the possibility of the predators reverting to be more animal. Did they turn prey into animals as well? Regardless of the answer, yes/no, they have this nature in them that can be brought out

2) Bellwether is shown as a cute sheep that is revealed to be the villain. This is meant to be a pull under the rugs, but they cheated in this moral message. The other girl goat, the girl in the beginning in the play, looks just like Bellwether, but the male sheep, the ones preparing the blue flora have those fucked up sideways eyes that are not cute at all. The cute girl sheep wasn't suppose to be cute looking, but if they didn't cheat to make her relate able and likable, she would have immediately been see as ugly, untrustworthy. Her revelation as the villain would have solidified any predispositions we may have had.

So the movie should have been the opposite to what is set out to be: Be cautious around people, because they may be dangerous and don't seem like what they look like.

Thing with the sloth scene is they put that scene, almost unedited, in front of Star Wars The Force Awakens, and basically everyone saw that before they saw Zootopia. Could have had a better in-theater reaction without that being spoiled a few months early.

On the other hand, it probably got a lot of people seeing Zootopia who wouldn't otherwise have, so it balances out.

Another minor bit I listened for was how many people had a delayed reaction to hearing "Weaselton" or "Woolter and Jesse".

>>
>>89010841
well, the plus side for Kubo is that it's in the lead for Annie nominations.

The downside is that the animation industry means dick at the Oscars, and more people and children when to see Disney stuff.

Kubo won't win an Oscar.
I'd be surprised if it's even nominated.
>>
I didn't watch it, was it disney masturbation?
>>
>>89006044
Not seeing that particular trend. Just comparing the years since 2006, when the Golden Globes introduced their animation category:

>2006 - Cars won Globe, Happy Feet won Oscar
>2007 - Ratatouille won both
>2008 - WALL-E won both
>2009 - Up won both
>2010 - Toy Story 3 won both
>2011 - The Adventures of Tintin won the Globe, Rango won the Oscar
>2012 - Brave won both
>2013 - Frozen won both
>2014 - How to Train Your Dragon 2 won the Globe, Big Hero 6 won the Oscar
>2015 - Inside Out won both

If anything, the pattern shows that the winner of the Golden Globe wins the Oscar 70% of the time.
>>
>>89005786
I loved the voice cast's work. Everyone delivered awesome, heartfelt performances and the animation staff stepped up to produce characters with organic body language. Not to mention how they rendered fur in such a way that the bar has been set too high for most studios to match.

The world they created was elaborate and challenging with subtleties, creating not just a world, but cultures.

>>
>>89010755
As another non-american I cannot see why you guys are so triggered. Yeah, he mentioned the dreaded diversity, but it was short and tame, in a live and let live manner. Divisions and rule of fear are real, there is nothing bad in mentioning them or trying to subvert them. Of course a blind push for diveristy for diversity's sake is equally bad, but that's far from what Zootopia was about.

I'm hopeful for the sequel. Perhaps the original feel se ne vrati pane Havranek, but after remaking the formula of 48 Hours for kids we could get a Lethal Weapon mold based story. The chemistry is there already, just let Nick and Judy be loose cannons who bring results. Any romance is optional.

This surprised me a lot. Most of the time, in my country in SEA, we would get the merch of a new movie pretty late (like maybe a month or two late), but Finding Dory had merch just outside the cinema's door, complete with backdrops and all that shit.

It just surprised me because I notice that Disney movies don't get that pushy with marketing with their animated movies lately. Stuff like KFP3 and Sing have Mcdonalds toys and other tie-ins but Disney is always lowkey about these things.

I actually don't mind the strong independent women thing, as long as it's appropriate. I think Judy fits well in that. She worked hard for her dream despite people thinking she won't succeed, and after realizing her mistakes she owned up to it; she "fixed" the city not just for herself but for the people she felt she "wronged". Rosita in Sing is a pretty good example for me too. She is pretty selfless for her family but still worked hard for her dream.

I think people always picture a woman fighting and all that as strong and independent, but it takes more than that to actually be one.

I disagree. Strong doesn't just mean physically strong. You can be strong emotionally, standing for what you believe in, being selfless for your family, etc. I think those are things I consider as "strong". And of course that is not limited to women.

Women can be strong and men can be strong. Women being strong doesn't negate men. I think this trope just gained traction is that women were probably told they are not strong enough for things, like what you are saying now.

People like you are what caused the crazy feminazi thing. There will be shitty people, women or men, and for these crazy women you are egging them to retaliate. Instead of them facing the fact that they are shitty people, they will play their "go gurrrl" and "i'm being oppressed" card on your face.

I bought them just because Disney Infinity was on a really really cheap sale (not quite as cheap as after the cancellation announcement) and wanted to check it out.

Then discovered you couldn't play through official Star Wars scenarios with non-Star Wars characters, and that the only Zootopia content was fan-made levels with inconsistent capitalization and misspellings and you had to use your imagination to pretend that this block of blocks was supposed to represent a massive city and I got bored and put them on a shelf.

I don't have the Youtube link offhand, but it was some Japanese morning show segment back in April or May where they sent someone to Los Angeles to get a tour of Zootopia's production offices. Rich and Byron were there and given photos of the anchors back in the studio, and then they came up with Zootopia OCs based on them and sketched them up. They did this for at least two different shows.

The quote came from Byron or Rich looking at a guy, deciding he looks strong, and starting to sketch him as a lion. Then the lady interrupts them by speaking in English, "He is...NOT strong." and telling them that he likes shellfish, at which point they scrap the lion idea and decide to draw him as an otter.

>>
>>89019436

is this why second script had preds with tags?
>>
>>89011857
Agreed. It never ceases to amuse me that Rey from TFA got beaten in the strong female protagonist department by a cartoon bunny.
>>
>>89019491
Not really. The story was always going to have tensions, it's the occasional choice of words that was added in.
>>
>>89019564
I think the problem with Rey is that she's not perfect but her big flaw is that she naively believes that one day her family will return and something about the performance or the direction doesn't sell that awkward delusion well. Finn's fear of the First Order works far better because the Order is depicted as being very dangerous.

With Judy, she's a good-natured individual but she has real flaws that work well within the world of Zootopia and how she's grows is more complex than Rey's simple acceptance that her family's not coming back.
>>
>>89019415

>>
>>89019719
I think you're on the right track that Rey's designated "big problem" really isn't one at all. But more damning (and where most of the criticism comes from) is how she doesn't really have to struggle all that much to succeed with most of what she does. Judy hits wall after wall after wall and overcomes them through her own hard work (and help from a friend who she inspires in a non-cringy way). She also makes honest mistakes thanks to her character, ones that the movie doesn't gloss over as a mere "event" (one exception included).
