do you think Nick Wilde was going to be the most miserable disney protagonist ever? He was constantly bullied by prey, big and small, when his father tried to open a suit shop he accidentally messed up, the only moment his life was going to turn right was when he opened his Wilde Park theme park for predators:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eNY3TBMILgI

which had to be closed right after because he he was framed

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R52eO6_666E

I wonder how this movie would end, leaving the city would give a bad message to young viewers.

Byron, on a sequel/spinoff
>There are so many ways you could go. It’s interesting to see, especially with Disney, once you finish one of these films, if it does land in a big way, it becomes so much bigger than us. It takes on a life of its own. A nice thing about being at Disney is that these movies can develop into a presence in theme parks and become something real, or maybe get a sequel, or tell other stories. The film is only 90 minutes long, and we only could fit so much in the film. There were so many environments we talked about, and animals we talked about. The fact that there are no reptiles or birds in the film was something we talked about.

>... I’m particularly fond of Clawhauser. He’s funny. Nate Torrence, the guy who performs him, has such a richness. We have so many hours of him being hilarious and fun. If it was affordable to do a TV show that was the same quality as the movie, I would watch The Clawhauser Show, every week. I’d want to see what that dude got into. I could imagine that. I wish the technology was there. We would totally do that.

Byron likes Clawhauser and thinks he should have his own show. Byron is God, confirmed.

Sorry hardly anyone has anything constructive or smart to say OP. I guess this is the audience a movie attracts when you remove all depth from it and just make it a zany, happy romp through the troubles of a few hurt feelings.

I think the movie would have had a spectacular ending if this dark, more troubling zootopia is what we got. The characters could have actually made a positive difference in the world and changed things for the better. As things stand, the final cut of the movie has an ending that feels very similar to the beginning; hardly anything seems to have been accomplished aside from Judy and Nick slightly having a different outlook on things. ..Yay? I guess.

The problem with "Savage City" is that even if Nick succeeded and the city decided to take the collars off the predators, we'd be looking at potentially a century of resentment between classes, possibly even longer. From what we saw, the subjugation of predators was going on for generations, to the point where not even the older predators questioned why things were that way anymore, and there were even cultural traditions that had sprung up around the shock collars.

Zootopia had been fucked up for so long that there was pretty much nothing Nick and Judy could have done that would undo all of the hate and prejudice that existed. If it had been going on for generations, then it would take generations to undo the damage. No-one wants a movie that ends with "maybe things will get better eventually, but it's not going to happen within the main characters' lifetimes, and ultimately they only had a small part to play in what is going to be a long, ongoing struggle that will take many years for the parties involved to get over."

Fennecs in real life are normally neurotic and feisty, which is what the original voice was going for. They changed his voice because according to the art book, they liked how it defied your expectations when he sounds like a big scary black man, and in the end it was a much funnier and more surprising moment when you heard him speak.

It'd probably end with another speech that was a lot like Judy's, only there'd be a line connecting the step forward if removing the collars to real world change like "in the end, the pain still remains and the damage has been done. It's always too late to change the past and the present is something so large and messy that the only thing we can do is try our best as we move to a better future, just one small, often clumsy, step at a time."

There's bias and stereotypes everywhere in Zootopia though. Bellwether just chose to exploit the misconceptions mammals have about each other in order to play out her bigoted fantasy of subjugating all predators. She incited the panic, but the racial tensions were already there.

I have a hard time imagining your parents would know what Undertale is.

Fortunately, liking Zootopia is socially acceptable as long as it's not taken to extremes, because adults are plainly part of the target audience. With mulp, it was clearly a show for very young girls that was slightly better quality than most, but the ironic fandom sprang up and took it too far.

Early in production Byron told the crew to only refer to Judy by her last name, because he wanted to keep them emotionally separated from her. This was at the point where she was supposed to be a bit of a cast-iron bitch, and we were not supposed to empathize with her. After they switched to Judy as the main character, and she evolved into a naive, infectiously cute good girl, people like Ginnifer Goodwin transitioned into calling her "Judy," however Byron still refers to her almost exclusively as "Hopps."

He's the stereotypical short, deep voiced ghetto nigger in a cute furry package.

Considering him and Nick hang and pull scams together, Nick stands in for the typical sly ghetto nigger that knows all the back alley tricks.

It would have still been a good movie, but the intended result of building sympathy with the main character shifted more into anger against the prey.

And the movie was funny before Moore (it seemed); Moore was responsible for flipping the plot without hamfisting the message. That being said, a lot of his pawprints can be seen in the jokes.

And I have to say, It was pretty alright. Bright and colourful with a decently original plot and premise.
I really enjoyed the animation of all the different species and environments.
Characters and story were perfectly acceptable but failed to really grab me.

But I can say I was entertained and does anything else really matter to a movie?

Don't forget Judy's dad thinking that Nick was her boyfriend in that one scrapped scene. They even mentioned how they regret taking out that scene exactly because it had the boyfriend joke in it

>>
>>83622572
Yeah, from pretty early on in production there was always a "special emotional bond" between Nick and Judy. I'm pretty sure the main part of the story was always meant to have the accelerated 48 hour clock ticking, and it wouldn't be realistic to have them become a couple in such a short time, but the way in which they're juxtiposed even in the early art is typically reserved for characters who are romantic interests.

The idea that Nick's attachment to Judy is so strong that it overpowers his base carnivorous instinct would be a really bold statement about how he sees her. If they went that far I don't really see what else the audience could take away from it other than that Nick loves her.

I trust for them to let it happen naturally, and without a corny speech. The characters have good chemistry for them to work with and they're already established as having an motional connection, so that's a good start. The important part for me is that it feels like it's well woven into the plot, without being the central plot or feeling like there's two stories going on in parallel that never really connect.

But the Zootopia were presented doesnt have any reason for prey to be prejudiced against predators anymore.
In the original story its clearly laid out that the prey are uncomfortable around preds because theyre afraid they might get eaten. That issue doesnt exist in the current version so theyre just prejudice for no reason at all now. Its lame.

I think it's pretty fascinating, but I'm glad it's not the movie we got. I find it strange how polarized people are about it-- people seem to fall into either the camp of "I wish I never knew about this" or "this looks way better than the movie we got."

I like finding out about drastically different early versions of movies and unused material, but I usually don't find myself pining for it to have been the version that got made, and Zootopia isn't an exception. I fell in love with the movie that I saw in theaters and I didn't find out about the grimdark version until afterwards. I have no such unrequited desire to see the Zootopia that I like replaced with the other one. It's an original movie, not an adaptation, and changing things is part of the process of making something.

>and the fact that he almost got away with such a dark idea just makes people ask what the hell was everybody thinking.
It's just a theory, but I think Byron, and some people too in the crew, have some resentments toward society in general because of what they are: For example, Byron is gay so his life was probably not that happy. So, during the writing sessions, their resentments had a big influence into the production which it would explain why the proto-Zootopia was that fucked up...

A good dose of "STOP WHAT ARE YOU DOING! WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS SHIT?!? CHANGE IT NOW AND DON'T FUCK UP THIS TIME!!!" have saved this movie and I hope they have learn their lesson about how you should keep your resentments outside of your works.

People arent racist for just absolutely no reason at all. They hear about stereotypes and society reinforces them because sometimes stereotypes are true.

But the stereotype about predators eating prey should no longer exist. It's been hundreds of years. Nick being stereotyped is fine, Bellweather hated ALL predators even though she has NO reason to.

Whether you think that's good justification for her actions or not is subjective. Prejudice doesn't always make sense, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

>Scene in Zootopia 2 where Judy is in Nick's apartment

>She finds a really nice suit either hanging up somewhere or tucked away in a gold trimmed cardboard box

>Nick talks about how it used to be his dad's, and how he was a tailor who made the finest suits in Zootopia before he lost his business.

>Judy says Nick should wear it, but he just laughs it off and says "I'm not a suit guy," gesturing to his un-tucked tropical shirt

>Nick ends up wearing the suit to their wedding at the end.

No one hates Byron. People love the movie he made. They really like him. However, its like hearing about all of George Lucas' stupid ideas for the original Star Wars that never made it into the film because they were terrible and he had no control. Byron is George before Episode I. A lot of great ideas mixed with a lot of terrible ideas and no way to tell them apart. That's why he needs Moore. To keep him from becoming George Lucas, the Wachowski's, or considering his fetishes that almost made it in, Ed Wood

This is a pretty fair way to put it, I guess. Byron is a really nice guy and he's really talented. He's been a really good sport interacting with the fans on social media (including me). Sometimes with people who have that much creativity though, they lack the introspection necessary to judge which of their many ideas are good, and which ones are bad. They need people around them who are perhaps not quite as creative, but have good taste, are good at their jobs, and aren't afraid to tell the ideas guy when he has an idea that either doesn't work or is just plain bad, and help come up with better ones that can take its place.

The worst thing that could happen to someone like Byron is to just leave him alone with no supervision and tell him to do whatever he wants, because that's where Zootopia's early production problems began. That's not a knock against his judgement as a director and creator, but rather it's something that can easily happen to creative people when they are working in a vacuum without enough people to provide critique and to bounce ideas back and forth with.

That's what led to the downfall of George Lucas and the Wachowski Brothers-- for Lucas, it was that he was a god of cinema who no-one was willing to say no to, especially since he was the one bankrolling all of his own projects later on. No-one wants to tell their childhood hero that one of his ideas sounds stupid, especially when he's also your boss.

In the case of the Wachowski Bros., Warner Bros. put too much trust in them after one hit movie, and they were so scared of interfering with what they thought was a creative goldmine that they didn't give them any wranglers out of fear that they'd snuff out their creativity. The two of them proceeded to have creative and mental breakdowns that after several years landed them in the ditch that they're now in.

You know, I hope that for the sequel they go ahead and revisit to the idea of Nick getting framed. And then have a montage similar to this sequence
>Nick getting taken into custody against his will
>collared and muzzled
>huge media blitz
>stripped of his badge on camera
>last shot lingers on a shellshocked Nick locked away in a cell and staring at nothing
>cut to black
>next scene starts after obvious timeskip

>>83608892
The more I see of this proto-Zootopia, the more I realize how much it didn't work. I think the producers focused so much on Wild Times that they didn't realize how the plot around it was just way too depressing. Like the Pixar execs said, the way the plot is structured makes you want to escape Zootopia, not save it, especially that dream sequence in the doctor's office. It is a shame that Wild Times got scrapped with all that work put into it though, and I hope they do find some way to bring it back in some way in the future. Also, I hope Nick gets to be the protagonist in the sequel.
>>
>>83622568
The villain has a pretty good motive, power. That's it.
She said it herself, she's using fear to gain popularity, 10 to 1. Nighthowlers were specifically used on predators to invite suspicion on predators and Judy reinforced that message on the public without evaluating all the evidence due to her own prejudice. In a state of panic people would cling to anything in order to explain the situation including unscientific conclusions loosely based on ancient history, "Um it happened like 3000 years ago so maybe that's why it's doing it again?"
Honestly I don't know why we need a better reason than this, because it's happening in our lives right now. They could make Bellwether the same sheep bullied by Gideon but that's makes her even more predictable and borderline on corny soap opera.

I don't think they could really make Nick getting framed work unless they showed that the ZPD were clearly on his side and arrested him because of legal obligation, and not because they don't trust him. There'd be no plausible way to make Nick want to go back to the force after clearing his name if everyone was an asshole to him, and immediately jumped to conclusions without even giving Nick the benefit of the doubt. Even if the whole city had turned against Nick, it should at least be implied that the ZPD wants to believe him, even if there's nothing they can do for him.

I love the current version but I also wouldn't mind a prequel using that idea.
It'll take exceptional writers to pull it off, but if it's a TV series, they will have enough time to handle it subtlety and appropriately.
The show can end with the collar removed and the time skip to current time itself would be able to explain how the resentment is resolved gradually.

I think that could work by factoring into his character arc. The police can't do anything and Nick tries not to begrudge them for it. Judy's the only one who's willing to really break the rules to help him even though it's going to really fuck with her career. Maybe she's on the cusp of being promoted and Nick already gave her his blessing earlier. After all, who was to say he wouldn't be right there with her in a few months. So later when they're on the run and trying to prove his innocence, they hit a brick wall in the investigation and Nick tries to push Judy away before it's too late for her.

"Carrots, I'm going to give it to you straight. Con men like me know a stacked deck when we see one. And right now? These mammals, whoever they are, they're holding all the right cards. We've got a bad hand and it's time to fold."

Cannibalism is a massive taboo in our society but it still happens. I'd imagine murder+ eating of prey by a predator is something that happens sometimes in the Zootopia world, maybe even frequently.
