I found it's really cute when Judy gives a little greeting to Finnick when Nick tried to find his wallet in Zootopia

what kind of little things you adore when watching other animated films?

I don't have a twitter but if I did I would just tell the directors that their team did a marvelous job in animating these characters. The scene where Nick messes up the math when speaking with Bogo is also very cute.

And a cynical part of me would also like to know if the shipping was considered in the marketing.
I'm happy they are leaving that as something that can be explored in a sequel, but the advertisements and Music Lists obviously appeal to shipping.

I don't know why, but I think Zootopia can just flat out adopt a lot of other stuff, just insert Nick and Judy in there, and call it a day.
The character dynamics practically write the rest of the story.

It's definitely not a film to digital transfer. That would require scanning equipment, it would take weeks, and you would see cue marks every few scenes.

Speaking of film, some anon pointed out that Fotokem apparently struck 35mm prints for this movie. I emailed them and I got no response. I guess I'll never see it in glorious 35mm.

Y'know, on repeated viewings, I've noticed that there's really no downtime in the film. It's all very neat and orderly, it proceeds to the next plot point right away with few breaks.

It's odd because I normally like that but in this case I just wanted to see more of the city and various other tidbits of everyday life like Judy going about her job and Nick talking about the past or whatever.

I think what this film did that the last two Disney films didn't really get around to was worldbuilding. The creative team obviously put a shit-ton more thought into the world of Zootopia than in either Big Hero 6 or Frozen (those were the last two animated canon movies released, right?).

Not only were the main characters interesting, but the world itself is detailed enough to support multiple stories. You just want to see more of the stuff around them.

Despite the great animation there are a handful of background characters that get copy pasted, but I didn't notice any of the other tigers with purple make-up on.

For the Sequel, if they use the same technology, they should have the ability to expand the look of the background and secondary characters.

It's not a film telecine, that's for sure. I watched the sample and there's no grain, no gate weave, no indication of having come from a print. However, I now have slight doubts that it's a cam, but I can't imagine what it could be.

I was thinking that it could be possible that the Chinese have broken the heavy DCP encryption and that's why they're calling this a "telecine," but it would be in much better quality and not have any overexposure if it were a straight rip. The overexposure is why I still logically think this is just a fantastic cam.

My friend won't stop bothering me with his stupid head canons. Today he told me that humans had long since ago left the earth and flew around the stars and shit, since it would have taken a long time for the other animals to catch up as far as evolution is concerned.

Its pretty retarded, considering if all the animals evolved to be smarted they'd look a lot different than they do to us now.

Hard Drive gets plugged into a port on the outside of the projector. File gets read off of the harddrive, decrypted with a symmetric key usually delivered over the network which is encrypted with, iirc, a hardware key built into the projector. If you try to do anything with the projector besides plug in a disc, it refuses to work until a certified technician from whoever built it comes by and resets it.

But think of the middle class, anon! Where did the money to strike all those prints and ship them to every theater come from? The corporate fat fucks at the top of the financial ladder.

There's also the fact that I think 35mm has better color, and I love seeing grain and gate weave. It's really just a personal preference. I'm excited to see 4k laser projectors coming around in the future, but it worries me because theaters can't afford to replace their projectors every few years when some new standard or some better image quality comes around. 35mm lenses and projector technology has been pretty much unchanged since the 20s.

I used to work of a company called ballantyne strong. We serviced the equipment. It's not a single unit, the projector typically sits on top of a rack and there's a server in the rack for playback...along with automation controls and sometimes the amplification.

The files are delivered as a harddrive or downloaded over Internet or satellite. Inbetween the server and the projector are a series of cables carrying encrypted signals somewhat analogous to hdmi. It isn't always that way though. Some theatres are not compliant and they sometimes have issues getting digital prints.

Cinavia is fun one. There's a lot conflicting information on it. The guys who make it say it survives pretty much all forms of audio encoding, but who knows how true that is.

I don't know of any stories of theaters getting busted, but I'd think they'd keep that internal if it did happen.

Modern theaters could barely afford the shitty bottom-line projectors when the aggressive anti-film switchover took place. Most local theaters run a relatively small profit margin. The black levels are determined by the absence of light projected onto the screen. There's no difference between the black levels on DLP systems or on film prints.

Additionally, 35mm film lacks the dynamic range of DLP systems. Some people have some nostalgic opinion were they prefer films with low dynamic range and grainy; but that's an opinion and an opinion alone.

If you prefer film, it's for your own reasons. There's no technical superiority to it. A DLP system is capable of projecting a digitized 35mm print and it would look identical to a 35mm print projected in the best of conditions. Except for dust and scratches of course. The same cannot be said for a digital film printed to film and projected on a 35mm projector.

>Staff leaves weird try hard creepy sketch stuff because I dunno

I wish the staff would communicate better.

Also are Wolves and Foxes colorblind like Dogs? Because if that's the case then the stop lights really need images on them
>>
>>82189462
DLP projectors cannot selectively project information. The black level is determined by how much light leaks from one pixel to the next, as well as how deep a black the chip will allow it to project. The higher-end models have decent blacks, the lower-end models have dark gray.

Selective projection is possible on plasma and OLED televisions and film projections. It's not possible on DLP technology.

Also, if you think film has "no technical superiority" to a DLP projection, you're already absolutely mistaken because there aren't any DLP projectors putting out 4:4:4 color resolution or anything even slightly approaching it.
>>
So do ya'll think Chumpy will come back after last night?

basically this, although it should be emphasized not all theaters run their projectors in the best of conditions. the theater I saw Zootopia in was pretty great; I can't say the same for my local cinema

I realize it's a meme, but what I said is actually fact. I didn't put any opinions in my post. I just simply said that film prints would have better color and better contrast. That's not to say that the film print experience wouldn't be ruined by an old shitty bulb, a dirty old lens, a dumbfuck operator, or a sloppy, lazy print striking job, as they usually are. I'm talking about ideal conditions. I do begrudgingly admit that theater projections have generally gotten better with digital projectors.

So... is there any 3D CG whatever the fuck animated novie that comes close to this one? I never thought I'd like anything CG but this movie was pretty great. I'd like to give it more than a 6/10 but that Shakira song and her shoehorned performance really takes a hard point or two off.

It's a real shame, you can feel some real heart and soul was put into this movie, but there's no way in hell anyone on that movie's dev team thought "Hey, let's get Shakira on board for a song."

I hope we'll see more creative freedom with overall tone in the sequel. I feel like I would have enjoyed the movie more if it were told from Nick's perspective too.

Overall the soundtrack is very forgettable, and the movie lacks a lot of wide shots, the camerawork felt tight as hell for the most part. Very fast paced too

But these complaints are probably a result of the development hell this movie went through. If the same team ever works with this world again then I think we'll get something even more extraordinary.

Posting best fox.

I felt like the pacing was relatively slow for a children's movie. Compared to that shitty new Star Wars movie, this movie's pacing felt like fucking Ben-Hur. I also really liked the cinematography and I remember lots of nice wide shots. You can't get too close with an aspect ratio of 2.39:1.

The Shakira song was bad and I wish it wasn't in the movie, but at least it was written specifically for the film and not some terrible pop song from three years ago that is already a punchline.

I also know where you're coming from with not liking CG movies in general. I would love to see a return of 2D dominance, but since 3D movies make all the $$$, that will never happen. Maybe one day the EMP I've always dreamed of will destroy computers and we can see real hand-animated movies again.
>>
>>82190630
Shame about the soundtrack, Giacchino has done some great stuff. I really wish they had made a central theme, like for instance his scoring of Up. Hell, I'd like to see a swap of Zootopia's soundtrack for Up's, to see what happens.

>>82190698
Sounds like you need to see the Making Of documentary. /co/'s heart broke when Nick's original story came out.
>>
>>82190716
I'll explain my point deductions again
-1 for shakira
-1 for poor soundtrack, probably phoned that in last minute
-1 for uberfast pacing
-1 for very tight camerawork. The world of Zootopia would have benefited from more wide shots and a better sense of scale.
Overall a great movie. 6/10 is above average in my book, I'm a fan of the film even. I've got that artbook ordered too. I guess just prefer 2D in the end though. Can't wait to see them storyboards and concept arts.

All these people complaining about the score should give it a listen on its own. I feel like it got buried in the mix a lot of the time. Ticket to Write, Jumbo Pop Hustle/Walk and Stalk are great, The Nick of Time is hauntingly beautiful, Some of My Best Friends are Predators, A Bunny Can Go Savage, Ewe Fell for It are all fantastic and memorable, and Suite From Zootopia is a nostalgic feeltrip. But that's just my opinion. Try Everything's pretty catchy as well.

i just want more proto zootopia storyboard footage

>>82190841
i think the very tight camerawork critique is kinda misplaced, considering there were some great wide shots and the sense of scale was pretty well handled i thought. note also that the focus of the movie was on interactions between the characters so i think overuse of wide shots when you're trying to focus on a conversation might have been a bad thing.

but of course i also would've loved to see more of the world so hopefully sequel/etc. will fix that.

the pacing, yeah. i understand that and i blame the having to rework the entire story.

i don't think the soundtrack was that bad either, not great, but everything else in the movie really made up for it. shakira also is not a big deal imo, try everything really grew on me.

my only complaint is the parlez-vous rap isn't on there.

your scores are imbalanced though, 6/10 is not the score of a great movie...that's hardly above average (5). i mean, that's your score but that's not typically how it works.

There are good bits, the 'Zootopia Theme' which you can here best in Suite From Zootopia at about 4:30 is actually pretty good, it just doesn't get used enough.

The main issue is there is no consistency in the score. Its jumps chaotically from style to style and just feels like 3 different scores mixed together with all the best cues cut.

They REALLY should have let Giacchino compose original music for the train sequence. I think he could have whipped up something God-tier. I mean he can do really incredible music for sequences like that: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mDsAs5dxuiA

He created the soundtrack for Inside Out which I thought was spectacular, so I'm kind of in agreement that the Zootopia soundtrack is a little underwhelming. The Inside Out soundtrack definitely carries its theme better as you can here bits of the theme throughout the other tracks. The Zootopia one completes its purpose alright though. Maybe he had to piece together the soundtrack from composing for the original concept?

That's how writing goes sometimes. When you've created a world and all the little details and populated it with characters you've slaved over and love and care for, it's easy to get set in one way. They were set in making predators oppressed, and making Nick the MC. Things developed from there, and I'm sure they only saw it as natural progression of fleshing out a racist world until they got Pixar's' wakeup call.

>>82191089
I'll give it another listen. The first and only time I listened to it all on its own was before the movie was out in the US, and I was pretty bored the whole way through. Watch the documentary. When a predator came of age they were given a shock collar - for young predators they thought it was a rite of passage, an exciting sign that you're growing up, but then they learn the truth.

Fucking dark. Personally I'm glad they scrapped it.
>>
>>82191980
In Protozootopia, getting your shock collar was a coming-of-age thing, like a Bar Mitzvah. The kid polar bear was excited to finally be a man...and then he learned that the collars trigger if you get too happy, too.

I honestly think not having them explicitly together at the end was a good move; it would've felt kinda tacked on if they'd suddenly been deeply in love at the end, but the chemistry is obviously there and it'll put people in the seats for the sequel.

I do think it was a bad move to outright shoot it down on Twitter, though. They were fanning the flames pretty expertly early on, and nothing fuels speculation and interest like ambiguity.
