Be honest, /co/. Has any animation you've seen done as much worldbuilding in as short a time as Zootopia did during the train scene?https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pj75bnsCM_k
ugh I just saw it today and it was really goodJudy was adorable and now im a furry
>>81957758Liking Judy doesn't make you a furry, we've been over this. You just like Judy.
Finally got around to seeing this today, and it was a lot better than I thought it would be.It's kind of bizarre to say this, but I actually liked this about as much as (maybe even a little more than) Kung Fu Panda 3. I know the Disney movie usually wins Best Animated Feature by default, but I'd actually be okay with it this year. That is, if Finding Dory doesn't do better (which I somehow doubt).
>>81957848We're about to hit $860 Million gross, and the Japanese don't get it until Saturday. I doubt Finding Dory is going to be able to top that unless it pulls some Minions-tier bullshit.
>>81957819you high? the fuck.
>>81957672do you reckon that whole sequence was nearly done with just nick and when the plot changed it was actually really easy to rejigger? the movie did have stupid detail for something that apparently got put together at the last minute.
>>81957848>Kung Fu Panda 3That movie sucked. No way it can be on the same tier with furrytopia.
>>81958029Nah, unlikely. Nick was always a Zootopia native. No reason for him to get the grand tour of the city when he had always been able to see the bright lights from his slum.
>>81957819He didn't say he is a furry because he likes Hopps. He said he is now a furry and incidentally likes Hopps. Then again, depending on exactly how much you like Hopps, that may well make you a furry on it's own.
I'd post but I'm afraid of the unpaid hot pocket man
>>81957672Its not worldbuilding, but the closest thing I can compare it to is the Test Drive sequence from HTTYD in terms of sheer spectacle and grandeurThe HTTYD sequence had way better music, I wish they had done orchestral music over the train sequence
>desustorage is no longer saving images and now past threads only bring up 404sWake me up inside
>>81958029mmm bleaker maybe.
>>81958095As much as I love orchestral music, I don't think it would have fit with the tone of the movie as well.
>>81958058>>81958029If I recall correctly there is a storyboarded scene in the documentary of Nick riding a train into what definitely looks like Zootopia (the one where he sticks his head out the window)
Oh, a package! I wonder what's inside
>>81958151That's him going back home, and seeing the glamorous city in the distance as he heads back to the ghetto. It wouldn't have had the same effect. It wouldn't have made us feel wonder about what happens in the city, it would have just made us hate it more.

>>81957672>tfw making a furry comic with an obscene amount of worldbuilding>tfw even though the only similarity to zootopia is the anthropomorphic animals, with society, species relationships, etc otherwise completely different, there's still an intense paranoia of being accused of ripping it off.

>>81958479I dunno, there really wasn't any theme that pulled me into the story. It was serviceable, but I can't imagine paying money for the soundtrack.
>>81958479Its just mediocre compared to most of Giacchino's work/animation soundtracks in general. There's no clear central themes, no standout cues. It feels kinda phoned in.

>>81958847How did you feel about the soundtrack, Anon? I personally don't think anything really stood out.
>>81958642I know it made sense given his backstory, but I really wish they didn't make Nick a police officer at the end. Not saying he should be a con man for the rest of his life or anything, but now the sequel will need a new "sleezy member of the criminal world that has information Judy and Nick need" character. Eh, I guess it will probably be the weasel or bat. Ignoring Shakira, I was really impressed to see how much the writers could establish in the 1:50~ of runtime it had.

>>81958877Not at all! What'd you take away from it, Anon?
>>81958891>people actually think Gideon wants to NTR Nick
>>81958877Anything would you like to share with the class?
>>81958868There's a bunch of criminals in the movie that didn't stop being criminals by the end, they wouldn't need a new character for thatI want Zootopia 2 to be a more personal story about Nick or Judy but everyone wants another social issue to be brought up and honestly that's weighing down all the potential for a new story
>>81958860Nothing really did, imo. If anything it's the weakest part of the film. I kinda wish the soundtrack was better, though Idk if we could manage a "let it go" tier song again>>81958877I guess so. Every time I come to these threads its that weaver person posting something and no one talks about the movie, or talking about fanfiction stories. It's a bit upsetting, I was hoping for threads where everyone talked about the movie, not OCs

>>81958939Those markings give off a serious Coldsteel vibe.
>>81958939Who the hell is he?
>>81957672Not in any recent movie. The concept of Zootopia is complex and there's a lot to take in, but it's achieved gracefully.
>>81958942Okay, this has been mentioned like 5 times now. Nothing is stopping me from talking about the movie, but I'm talking to a wall essentially. The point is to join the thread and everyone is discussing the film, but everyone here just talks about OCs and fanfiction stories. I can't control what you all talk about and if you're having fun then that's great, but it's a bit of a shame when a Zootopia thread is really just a "Zootopia fanfiction and OC discussion" thread in disguise.
Sup /co/. I haven't seen the movie yet, is it worth it?
>>81958547God, imagine Zootopia with Up's theme. For extra points imagine it as Zootopia 1.0.

>>81958924Yeah - in all honesty, I didn't really notice the music most of the time. There's nothing truly evocative or emotional, it really just fell flat.>>81959024It's definitely worth it, even if the music is fairly lackluster!
>>81959048>>81959064How would you compare it to other animated films, like my current favorite How To Train Your Dragon? I can forgive a lackluster soundtrack, I mean look at Shrek. Terrible soundtrack, but decent movie.
>>81958112Isn't it because they're performing maintenance?
I love this movie, it's been over two months now, yet I keep coming back to these threads. This movie is pretty, smart and funny. Sure it's not flawless: shakira's singing is meh, and Finnick got kinda pushed out from this movie. He wasn't even at the dance party.
tfw it seems like you're the only one in the thread who liked the soundtrack.
>>81958949Gideonfags need to be exterminated.
>>81959060Oh cool. I wonder if Zootopia has its own spy agency.
>>81958906>>81958917I dunno. It was a funny movie. Characters were fun. World was cool, would've liked to see more of both.
>>81959060>John Lasseter's name in giant letters on the first twoHe has quite the ego doesn't he
New minor detail to look for on rewatchings: "Right. And that's not wet cement." Look behind Nick's legs toward the left of the screen. There are a couple of mice by the wall watching them too, not just the beavers.
>>81959100>Finnick got kinda pushed outIt's a shame too, all they had to do was give up on the shock collarsI like Judy but I hate the fact that her being the protagonist got rid of all these fun characters
>>81959133Why would a city have its own spy agency? Leave the spying to the federal government. In fact, the sequel can be about a clash between the ZPD and the feds.
>>81959092It's a feelcoaster. So, if you have problems in your life, it will be extreemely painful few days later.
>>81959092>shrek>terrible soundtrackI'm going to ignore that but as a final product httyd dragon is superior. But seeing as httyd2 was ass, zootopia has the better universe.
>>81959179I kinda thought the whole city was too big to just be fun by one mayor.
>>81959168>all they had to do was give up on the shock collarsBut that's what they did.
>>81959179People bring up the rest of the world a lot, but if you think they seemed to go WAY out of their way to avoid the topic of the world outside of Zootopia. All the flags are Zootopia flags, all the forms at the DMV refer to the Zootopian licensing agency instead of a state or federal level one. The writers probably didn't want to write themselves into a corner for potential sequels
>>81959205>HTTYD2 was ass
>>81959205>httyd2 was assyou know what's crazy /co/ is the only place that thinks this, I've never seen this anywhere but on /co/ where it's the prevailing groupthink opinion. I think it's damn near the best animated sequel ever made. /co/ is also the only place I've seen that liked KFP2 as well.
>>81959205I never saw the hype behind httyd. Granted, I loved the books when I was younger, and seeing them use the name with such a different concept put me off it entirely, but even when I put the old books out of my mind it still seemed pretty average to me.
>>81959205>>81959180Alright, I think I'll wait for the blu-ray to come out then. Thanks for the input guys.>>81959230>>81959247HTTYD2 wasn't ass in my opinion, but it definitely lacked some of the charm of the first.>>81959250HTTYD had books? Mind telling me the author? I swore I read them but I can't remember.
>>81959250You are the first person I've encountered who actually read the books. You from the UK by chance?>tfw you ordered all the books after seeing the movie even though you were 17, and embarrassed by it.
>>81959218But we've seen the outside world. Bunnyburrow is over 200 miles outside Zootopia. We also heard of Podunk in Deerbrooke County. Zootopia is basically a kind of New York City and is huge enough to have its own flags and agencies and such, but the whole state/country/world isn't Zootopia.
>>81959150One thing I will add. I don't see judy and Nick getting together.
>>81958920I dunno. As an elseworld with no established connection to our own besides not!NYC megacity, they could push the whole "social issues" concept in some creative directions. Like-----this world clearly has a history, presumably a time when predators and prey were in perpetual conflict, with the formers trying to hunt and eat the latter. Maybe the next movie could address a sudden resurgence in that practice, since in the setting it's basically cannibalism, and the general question of what it means to be civilized. Or what lead to the establishment of this semi-peaceful coexistence between so many species in the planet? Is specism a bigger issue elsewhere? Will the stigmas against predators carry over into the next movie, despite the original conspirator being arrested? Stuff like that would be interesting to focus on..
>>81959288>and embarrassed by itYou should beThe books are ass
>>81959290Its odd they said BunnyBurrow was 200 miles outside the city, since a lot of the early art had it close enough that the BB->ZT train was an extension of the subway system
>>81959292But all the pictures and artworks.
>>81959310>All this calling of HTTYD content ass in this threadIs an exterminatus in order?
>>81959292>I don't see judy and Nick getting together.
>>81959271By Cressida Cowell. In the books, everybody had a dragon, like it was a coming-of-age ritual for a kid to venture into the untamed Dragon caves and come out with one. Hiccup was the chief's son and was entitled to a fucking awesome dragon but being the wimp he was he just grabbed something and ran, and it turned out to be a shitty little asshole dragon with no teeth, hence the name. Instead of everybody hating dragons like in the movie, they just saw them as tools or pets, and the special thing about Hiccup was that he was the only one that bothered to learn and speak their language.
>>81958920I want more backstory on nick. We literally know nothing about him besides his dream of joining boy scouts, and concept from proto-zootopia that most likely wont be canon.
>>81959290It's not really a "huge enough" thing. I thought all cities had their own flags; you just don't see those flags outside of city hall.
>>81959336Have you looked at the HTTYD artbook where they have some art from when the movie was gonna follow closely to the books? Soooooooo comfy
>>81959288Nah, I'm from California. They just happened to be in the bookstore and I was crazy into dragons at the time. I read them since the second book, but stopped getting them long before the movie was a thing.
>>81959336sounds shit I prefer the movies already
>>81959345Well, until directly contradicted by a sequel, it was just Nick and his mom. No dad, no siblings.
>>81959336Yeah never mind, never read this series. Oh well. I guess the movie's adaptation is more suited for action though.
>>81959179Who says Zootopia isn't a city-state?
>>81959331Read the wiki article on the production, even Chris Sanders thought the concept was too juvenile for a movie
>>81959345We can sorta guess that he never really had any friends because he closed off his emotions to people so that they couldn't hurt himFinnick could've been his friend but Rich just had to ruin it on twitter
>>81959414Well yeah I agree with that, but that doesn't mean they aren't comfy books.
>>81959335Didn't the writers say they weren't?>>81959319Who knows, maybe in time.
>>81959353Shit, that sounds awesome. I'll dig around. God, I loved those books back then.>>81959368I'm sure the series would have been awful if directly adapted to screen, but in some ways to me they went too far. They removed almost all complex character traits from Toothless (who started as a whiny little shit who very incredibly slowly started to understand and listen to his master) and by extension took a lot of character from the world by taking away the dragons' speech ability. Seems I'll have to rewatch it though, back when httyd came out I was in a total "animated things are only for babies" mentality.
>>81959439The writers have never said they are not getting together, they also didn't say they are. Unless Rich posted a new tweet lately that confirms it?Last I heard they openly said that they are "deciding where it should go" No one knows where Nick and Judy will go from here, they're friends at the moment is the only thing confirmed, which kinda sucks but it's what it is

>>81959345Nick will hopefully develop in a sequel. I loved that Nick was secretly childish/needy despite being a tour de smug, but his back story was really watered down. Shame too, the writers said his personality took a lot of work.

>>81957672physically showing the world to you =/= "worldbuilding"More of this was accomplished during the opening play and the police academy scene.Unrelated note, I finally got around to seeing this and I honestly have to say I was underwhelmed. For a movie that seems to get endless praise for its worldbuilding, it really is very poorly explored. We get the vague notion that at some point in the past, things were different, and now a ton of animals live together in harmony in a city with different climates to support their needs. I feel like a 12-year-old could have come up with that, and considering they never really went any deeper than the surface of the concept, I wasn't impressed. It might be the grumpy cynic in me, or just the fact that I'm getting older, but the movie just felt like a kid's movie, which is something I thought we were getting away from with animated features. Things moved slowly and were painfully telegraphed so that the audience wouldn't be left behind. Compare this to something like, say, the Lego movie which moves along at a better pace, offers more compelling ideas, and integrates all of its character moments into the plot a lot more seamlessly.

>>81961893 Not that person, but though every country has an element of racism in its society, America has racism written into its very history and as a result the topic is a major part of its culture. And though other cultures and countries almost certainly has racism, it may not be the most pressing issue the its people face. It may be discrimination of religion, gender, class, etc.The people who made this movie almost certainly had race in mind, but I really like the fact the story didn't have to be about race in particular, but rather discrimination in general.

The concept is simple at it's core and but it's more well thought out than it had to be and tells a story where the source of conflict isn't just internal for the characters, it's real in all of us.How did things seem painfully telegraphed to you?

She's not going to party at the crime boss' house for tea and drinks every day but she will probably hit him up for info from time to time. Like the purse thief, Judy could probably just demand information or threaten to lock animals up too anyway depending on the criminal. Nick still has his contacts and I'm sure he'll know how to stay in contact with the criminal underworld too. It's not really a close and shut deal.Like with Flash at the end, they're not going to drag him into lockup, they'll probably give him a warning or write him a ticket and if he begs not to, they'll probably work something out as long as he stops stomping on the pedal like a maniac.

>>81958201>>81958288Yeah, I know the feeling. I am in the same boat with a project of mine.However....Maybe it is because I am old (mid 30's), but over time I have learned not to worry about this. Broad strokes, and even details end up similar between things all the time. Literally just keep going with your project. Both art and entertainment are evolutionary industries wherein everything builds off of everything that came before it. To be quite honest, that is how storytelling itself has been since the dawn of time. It would be like saying "Zootopia ripped off of Lackadaisy, and Poppy O'Possum, and Zoophobia (among many others)" just because it has some visual stylistic elements, world building elements, and a title that are similar to those. So never fear. The "similarities game" is a two way street, and History is kind to projects and people who stick with it and follow though.

>>81963423Do I have to learn all that just to do some digital fanarts?
>>81958159>>81958167Speaking of Dragon dildos guess who which website has Zootopia related new products and a new custom background
>>81963507sorry if that upsets you. It might seem odd, but I don't really follow the names and didn't know the post was made by this person. This is book I'm currently using to learn and it works very well, so I can definitely recommend it as a good source. Why not share a good book?>>81963541Honestly, I have no idea. The book I linked focuses on realistic drawing, but has very interesting points concerning shifting your consciousness into the state which allows one to draw - I feel I am making rapid progress.I figure zootopia fanarts will be easier to draw once I get hang of realistic drawing and perception rules so I'll let you know once I'm done with the book.
>>81963541Do you want to draw good fanart, or you you want to be DA-tier trash?
>>81961598How did they manage to have such varying biomes right next to each other? I know the walls were there, but you can't just have the Arctic right next to a desert. The clash in temperatures would create weird weather wouldn't it?
>>81963574Damn that's pretty looking with nice touches on the color.
>>81963610>animal super science>suspension of disbeliefpick one. or both.
>>81963355It's theoretically possible in a technological wonderland that has infinite energy and resources, but Zootropolis isn't exactly Star Trek. If they have the energy to power heat pumps large enough to create a miniature Arctic right next to a miniature Sahara, they wouldn't need carrot farms. There's a reason Qatar produces the most carbon dioxide per person, and countries like Australia and the US aren't far behind. Cooling and water processing takes loads and load of energy.
>>81963610It would cause a forever hurricane. The science was semi-sound though. TheWall was a giant heat pump. Sucking allthe heat out one side and pumping it out theother.A wall would be needed though

>>81963758The film was rendered at 2K resolution, so the Blu-Ray will be almost as detailed as the theatrical version. If they decide to re-render it at 4K and release it as a 4K Blu-Ray, then it will be even better than the theatrical run, which will be confusing and awesome.
>>81963712I watched a movie without my glasses once. It was awful.
>>81963863>4k zootopiaman was not meant to witness such high detailed smugfox
>>81963861My local AMC has discount tickets on Tuesday.I called to find out theatre times for Zootopia on a Tuesday. Waited 20 minutes for a bus, then 30 minutes on the bus, and then got to the theatre 15 minutes before the time they gave me.They swapped it out for some bullshit early preview for some movie I don't remember.Made me so fucking mad.The manager was there to try and talk me down when I got mad so I just threw my membership card at them and walked out.Went to a Red Robin for dinner, spent an hour getting home, then spent the rest of the night sick with food poisoning.Never again.
>>81963861What? The incredibles? That movie is waaaaaaaay old enough to be long gone out of theaters by now.
>>81963771>Kept you waiting, huh? That doesn't make any sense. Was Judy in hospital or something?
>>81963723It's small on the scale of the atmosphere. They would need to have at least one area totally enclosed within an insulated greenhouse type thing. With that wall as it in the film the hot area would immediately lose its heat to the atmosphere, the cold area would almost immediately lose its heat to the atmosphere and the jungle area would probably lose its moisture to the atmosphere.
>>81963861Is it because too many people are watching it?
>>81962650>Anyone got Judy's pages from the artbook?Anyone, please? They were high quality scans.
>>81963949>The product is too successful>Replace it with something less popular
>>81963861Aw that sucks. I live in a suburbia, so there are a dozen theaters within a 10 mile radius. Heck, I was thinking of going solo to a 3D showing sometime this week.I've seen the film in 2D three times now, and there are plenty of scenes where the characters look 'flat' although they are 3D models. I want to see this world with simulated depth.Any other stoners chilling around? I smoked myself a joint before the movie for 2 of my viewings. Zootopia is a great film for the ganja, promotes peace and unity, looks absolutely stunning, and it's got Tommy Chong. A great high movie.
>>81963917>I got mad so I just threw my membership card at them and walked out.Are you literally a child? Who the fuck throws temper tantrums like that? Also, LOL at your weak ass digestive system.
>>81963863Then again some 4k BluRays available now are just use upscaled footage from 2k versions.Which pretty much doesn't cost them anything and most consumers will not notice anyhow.
>>81958877No, its just the usual "AWWW SOMETHING I DON'T LIKE I'D BETTER DOOMSAY!" bullshit that's cursed these threads since before the movie came out. >>81963991I imagine a lot of movies from the early 2000s to about 2014 will be released on 4k Blu-Ray as upscales. Digital intermediates and CGI overlays had been done at 2k until very recently. Ironically, all the films made before 2000 and digital intermediates can be scanned and released without any problems.

What is Zootopia's equivalent to our animal testing?I mean they kind of need some sort of disposable nonsapient easy to breed mammal to test drugs and shit on before graduating to sapient mammals if they want to get development of any kind done. For example, they have a space program. The Soviet Union sent up Laika well before they sent up Gagarin. Who did Soviet Zootopia send?Sending bugs into space just won't give you the kind of data you need to send up a mammal.
