I saw it with a kid, the only thing the kid took away from the movie is that in real life he's constantly being told he can be anything he wants and in this move he was shown that, that's not true unless you work really hard at it.

It seemed to have been some sort of revelation as it sort of blew his mind that his goals are not going to be attainable through simple means and that others will stand in his way and be disagreeable.

So, I guess that's actually a pretty good lesson to get out of this movie, the racial stuff sort of flew right by him or he just saw it as a dumb joke without meaning.

I agree with a lot. My biggest flaws with this movie is that the villain was literally just Hitler as far as motivations went. He brought that up as well as some minor things like rushing the ending and some bland sound/music choices.

He gets caught up on shit like the blue berry for far too long and his final score is harsh when you consider how much he said he looked it on a not nit pick level, but not an inaccurate review.

It's nice seeing that there are prominent(?) furries that are willing to actually critique the film instead of herald it as the second coming of Christ

ohh, that is good. We are too re-wired to think only about racism or sex due to media conditioning, sadly. How good we have someone to put things in the perspective.

I also don't really like "racism" in the context of the movie, I would think "acceptance" would be a more accurate term, but maybe it's just me.

Pretty much every problem with the movie is due to the hasty rewrite. Byron and the story team had a story they really wanted to do and put a lot of thought and care into, then had to change it into a completely different movie it in a very short amount of time. It's amazing the movie turned out as good as it did - compared to say, Frozen, where every aspect of the movie feels rushed and unfulfilling. But when you think about the story you really feel how rushed it is. The whole plot progresses almost completely thanks to coincidences and lucky breaks, and the last act is pretty weak. The villain's boring and does the now tired "last minute surprise villain" schtick. The stakes are too low and everything works out way too neatly.
>>
>>81693208
Byron and the team were smart as fuck as to develop the world before the story which made it easier to make the changes compared to Frozen that went so far as to switch to CG and completely change it's plot and do a complete 180

I feel like he was mainly set out to not like this film based on the furries thing, because his nitpicks are pretty damn minor for the most part and given how he mentions furries furries take pictures of furries furries market to furries fetish fetish furries furries about a million fucking times. He even does that annoying thing where he starts attributing innocent shit to the producers trying to work in the fetish crowd, because the fat cat police guy was definitely created to draw in the 0.5% of the population who's into fat gay furries, for sure.

Came here to say this. Not only did they make a point of showing her parents' prejudices, which obviously influenced her, even if he didn't want to admit it, this plays on the whole theme of the movie. I'm usually the first one to complain about that formula, which is why I was impressed with just how much it actually worked here.

Judy knows about midnicampum holicithias. She'd never heard "night howlers" used in conjunction with the flower, and she'd never heard the Uncle Terry story so she didn't know its effects. As far as she knew, it was just a flower that was meant for decoration.

technically, we're the weird ones. We freedom-of-mobility countries are outnumbered by the societies out there that just have 'BE CONTENT WITH WHERE YOU ARE' hardcoded into their cultures' DNA. And yeah, I'm not letting India/Pakistan/Bangladesh off with their caste system either.

>>

>to be fair, our perverse brand of capitalism kinda does enforce this as well
De-facto we do have classes in the US, but at least we make people feel good by promising them upward mobility even if most of them will never move up.
>>
>>81694131
Maybe in some backwater theater you can see the movie on a film reel, but I imagine those are pretty rare.

Film is actually fast becoming obsolete, to the point where the few remaining companies that manufacture film for movies are considering ceasing production. I think Quentin Tarantino has threatened to stop making movies if he has to go digital, and some other spoiled whiners are also trying to campaign to keep film in production. The fact of the matter is that there's really no advantage to using traditional film anymore other than snobbery, and there's an entire generation of directors now who have never even touched a film camera.
>>
>>81694548
True. We're only stuck where we are in practice. But the ideal of the system is, we can be anything...wait, where have I heard that before?

And usually, it's the other people in the other classes that attempt to prevent lowers from moving into their classes - many of them see it as a zero-sum game where for every schmoe who gets to their level, that diminishes where they are.

I'm just thankful i was born into the 'right' family.

Just like some citizens of Zootopia are probably thankful they were born into the 'right' species.
>>
>>81694594
I bet film still exists for a lot of worldwide releases. Over here, some of the theaters I *think* are still primarily analog. I've seen delivery boys carrying reels in those round metal cases, shuffling them from theater to theater.
>>
>>81691995
He had some good points and some dumb points.
>>
>>81694594
IIRC one of the main advantages to film currently is that it can be projected at a higher resolution, though that's not really something most people would care about.

Personally, I love film grain, so a movie shot on film always has that little bonus for me. Of course, it works better for some genres than for others. But yeah, there isn't really a need for it anymore considering how far digital has progressed. Not to mention the failure rate of film projectors is so high compared to digital ones.
>>
>>81694009
The point is that she has more reason to know the colloquial name than the botanical one. You'd have to believe she never left her house or asked her parents why they were never allowed to touch this flower. It's just lazy writing.
>>
>>81694943
When you're not too fond of where you live (Bunnyborrow) and want to be something that bad (cop), it's believable you'll place more importance on things you learn in the latter context than the former.

I'm an ichthyologist and I know the scientific names of most fish I see at a local market. I don't know crap what their colloquial common/lay names are though. Even though those are the names that my grandma/aunts/maids use for them. I just know them by their scientific names period.
>>
>>81694943
>the colloquial name
I'd assume, as an earlier anon said, that her parents didn't know. They referred to them by the botanical name to those other kids, and I think had they known the term "Nighthowler" they would've used that instead. I'm not sure if it was entirely a colloquial name.

Now, Judy may have known about the effects this flower could have, but with no knowledge of the term Nighthowler being applied to them, that information was likely irrelevant. I'd guess she was somewhat suspicious of Duke stealing them specifically, but at that time she had no direct connection with the names.
>>
>>81694943
You'd be surprised at how often kids just accept being told not to do something without questioning it. The kid doesn't care if the thing is something that doesn't effect their lives like, "don't touch those flowers".
It's a little contrived because this is a movie, but it's not that bad.
>>

Ok I just saw this movie today, heres my review.

Animation
Is done well, at times its obvious where budget cuts are made when background characters have no animation whatsoever.

Themes
Its way to obvious that this film is just saying "dont be racist". The seperation between prey and predators is an odd one, since Predators are carnivores, but we'll skip over that detail.
Its obvious the movie wants to show that minorities are not to be feared, which is true, however the "Predator attacks" allude to terrorist attacks and in this sense predators are supposed to represent those from the middle east, in particular muslims.

Lets take a case study of sweden or germany; increased crime, rape, decreased standards of living are in direct correlation with the increase of immigrants. Does this movie intend to say "ignore this, not all muslims are bad!"?

It also hints at inclusivity programs being a benefitial thing to the modern workplace. However, the main difference is that Humans are one species whereas Zootopia accomidates for seemingly unlimited species thus the point isnt portrayed correctly since it is a false equivalence.

Characters
The character design in the film is executed well however the roles of the characters leave us questioning the writers decisions. Predators are revealed to be a minority later on into the movie yet they appear to dominate Zootopia.

Story
This is the part that left me dissapointed. Zootopia sets out to be a drama/ mystery while also exploring global issues. The mystery part of the story is constantly disappointing. The major plot twist being that the Lamb sectrary is the mastermind comes too far out of the blue. When she becomes mayor our suspicions are raised as she previously had not been a suspect. However twists like this mark bad mystery writing as it doesn't llet the viewer solve the mystery along with the detective. The evidence with the case is not displayed in a manner that leaves an air of mystery to the case. The "night howl" being a flower thats been weaponized comes out of the blue and feels like poor detective writing to an already weak story about a minority making it within the "big city"

Fandom
The pandering to furries is apparent through the film, with different sections of the film fan servicing each fandom. Baby furs, nudists, wolf furries and the like share screen time. While not neccesarily a bad thing we have to question whether or not this is pandering to an audience with a mental deficiency and reinforcing their behaviors. Perhaps meant as a means to market to a larger and older audience it also promotes inclusion similar to homosexual movements of modern times, although we see no non traditional relationships within the film.
>>
>>81695121
>>81695101
3/3

A highly questionable part of the film is the dead obvious Breaking bad references with both the "night howl" laboratory producing a blue liquid and verbal references to "Jessie and Walter" the protagonists of the series. Seemingly innocent to anyone without knowledge of the topic, the respirator mask used during production is the first dead give away as well as the attire worn by the lab worker. Does this reflect on our societies modern values and perhaps how we have come to partially accept drug culture as part of modern day life.

Conclusion
For a disney film Zootopia is incredibly in depth in its political aspects. Rarely does an animated or childrens film leave us questioning the morality of our modern society, perhaps the only film of its class to carry such subliminal political messages aimed at both children and the parents.

- nazrin

Overall I give the film about a 4/10 mainly due to the fact its not subtle enough and the mystery aspect sucks. The comedy with flash was pretty weak too
