Who do you think is more emotionally mature: Nick or Judy? Nick is older, but in a lot of ways he seems like a hurt little boy who's still trying to prove the bullies didn't get to him. Judy comes across as hyper and impulsive. They both seem like they have a lot of growing to do, but Judy actually seems like the more mature one.

There's more in play here than just raw graphics anon. Any chuckle fuck can make a cgi film that looks realistic, it takes a certain kind of dedication to art direction to strike the balance between cartoon appeal, aesthetics, colour choice, and "muh realism", all while avoiding uncanny valley, seen in Zootopia. Where predators slaves to the prey animals at one point? Or was it the other way around?

I'd watch a movie about how Zootopia was founded, maybe like a realistic mirroring of how the USA was founded or how the Civil war really happened, which was more for personal interest rather than looking out for the fellow man.

There's a pic of tribal lions and tribal Zebra coming to an agreement in front of a watering hole. It's in the concept art.
For the original script, obviously Preds back then wouldn't agree to that fucking collar bull shit. My thinking is that an event, probably a terrible one, led to the use of the shock collars on predators.
For the Movie release it's safe to assume they built up a society with little major conflict between the two types until Bellweather's plot.

Why is it a bad thing that graphics improve?
>>
>>81497300
In my personal headcanon it got cyclical over the course of history.

Prey outnumber predators massively, so it's not hard to see them zerg rushing Preds into submission.

Preds though have more pack-hunters and would be better at organizing themselves into strong units and building up a full-scale empire.

(Cancerous levels of faggotry ahead!)

The most recent (and perhaps brutal) pred-centric empire being one founded primarily around wolves calling themselves The Romulans, after their god-emperor/founder Romulus. Their influence going so far as to begin eugenics programs which led to why there are domesticated pigs, sheep, and cows in a world without humans.

Disney has learned not to commit too heavily to movie merchandise unless they have a safe bet like a sequel or a sure hit.

if Zootopia is hundreds of years old, I would love to see a mockumentary of the history of their civilization, mentioning periods of struggle and war with other populations and how key figures in history managed to shape the city into what it became.

Also some species must have definitely gone extinct during zootopia's lifetime, it would be interesting to see the impact of loosing an entire segment of the population forever.

It also screams tumblr for some reason.

And now I want to play with this idea too.

The last mammoth is a known figure. He was basically Beowulf but a historical figure (albeit lots of exaggerations and myths got blended into his story). The short of it though was that when he died in his final battle, it was acknowledged then and in the present it was sort of the end of an era.

If I had to do it, it would just be a short story involving a human in Zootopia who works a pretty mundane job. He's escaped public attention and scrutiny by acting casually the entire time, causing everyone to think of him as a shaved something or another. They've got more important things to do.

He doesn't know how he got there and the story would detail his struggles in this strangely familiar, but unmistakably different world.

He sometimes thinks about eating his neighbors and customers or getting eaten by his neighbors and customers.

The last line of the story would be him thinking,

"I wonder where all the monkeys went."

Well there's a cheerier alternate ending idea where Nick (prodded by Judy) returns the protagonist's wallet which he pickpocketed from him several years ago (it doesn't have any cash because Nick doesn't remember how much was in it) and apologizes.

They trade a few barbs, with anon sarcastically musing how a former con artists is now with the police, god help us all, but this encounter makes him realize that while Nick has gone on and become a cop in the interim between him stealing and returning the wallet, the protagonist has just been where he's always been and has never actually left the city.

He decides to take his savings and explore this alien world.

He still won't eat bugs though.

As he leaves, he hears Try Everything play on a radio and hates how it's coming back in style because of the damn retro craze.

I'm hesitant to include a scene where he briefly runs into an ex-gf because on one hand a guy's got needs and he's been in town for almost a decade. On the other, I can't decide what species she'd be or if I should even mention one.

(I decided to just kinda draw the school play scene)
I just got the GREATEST idea on how they could do a Zootopia sequel.

hear me out... remember those 3 kids at the school play? the movie focused on how Judy grew up to become what she wanted... but what about the other two? did she became an astronaut? did he became a business man?

Why not find out? How about for the sequel the next movie focuses on one of them as they grow up and go through their own struggles to accomplish their dreams? This way they could continue to explore the world of zootopia through other perspectives and give us a big cast of characters that Disney would of course make toys of.

They wouldn't necessarily meet up but it could be interesting to see how Judy's actions also affected the other two, like maybe the business lion got denied some big deal because his bosses dont trust him for being a pred, maybe the astronaut is shown to be distrustful of a predator companion or something.

I think this could work. what about you?

Honestly, I really want to see Nick and Judy more and buddy cop stuff, but this would be an awesome companion movie.

Though I especially think the Sheep has a bit more potential for struggle since astronaut is a VERY physically and mentally taxing vocation, combined with the Bellwether shit there'd be a big distrust in Sheep.

It's implied by Gideon (granted, not the best source) that the play was entirely Judy's idea. So the sheep and tiger might have just been assigned those dreams (note how wooden their declarations are in contrast to Judy's) for the duration of the production.

Also, Space Program probably wants to use smaller animals exclusively like mice and stuff for costs.
>>
>>81500880

I was thinking that maybe at least one of them would feel inspired by Judy's determination and they decide they really would want to accomplish something big... maybe the sheep and the lion decide to switch careers respectively

Too dark to not relate to it? No, it wasn't. That's the problem. It was the kind of dark that people watch Disney movies to escape from. It's too damn real. If the city-state you're writing can be described as "comparable to Apartheid South Africa", it might be too dark for a Disney movie.

Which is fine, but one of their goals was to make people love the world and Zootopia.
Even after watching the documentary, seeing the world that they originally made, the collars and the preys demeanor towards preds. It's fucking abhorrent. I would have loved it as a film, but they're absolutely right when they say that you would want Nick to leave rather than save that shit hole.
>>
>>81502388
The original story was actually more nihilist and just make you want to see Zootopia being nuked after that Nick & maybe Judy get the fuck out of the city. I think the reason why they wrote the story like that is probably because a lot of resentment and hate were release during the process of writing, but I can wrong about it.
>>
>>81502678
They wanted to get people to love the world of Zootopia. The shock collars utterly prevented that from happening. You didn't want Nick to save Zootopia; you wanted him to lead a predator uprising. You wanted to see Sun City burn to the ground and take all its monuments of hate with it.

There's this bit of fanart which has a collage collared Finnick in a sports jersey.

The last part of it is him looking mad and frustrated. Par for the course you'd think.

But then the artist explains in the description that that's him after he got too excited about his team winning and his collar zapped him.

He then had an emotional breakdown where he complained to Nick that he can't even enjoy himself too much without getting electrocuted for it.

Then Nick lays his paw on top of hers as she switches one final time and has her settle on whatever song is currently on, ideally landing on a really slow/romantic version of "Try Everything" like a Gazelle remix for a romantic setting.

I am wondering... , for two fucking YEARS, not months, not days, not weeks, but YEARS, They were working on a movie that everyone would hate, the audience, the critics, even the animators.
What was Byron thinking during the whole time? That unjust discrimination is A-ok? No one called him on that when they were making these animations of suffering father who did nothing wrong, a polar bears gets tased because he go his torture device on? What was the animator thinking when he animated that? "This is fine, this will work in Disney movie about cute animals doing not anima things". Why they realised this so late during the production, that they need to flip the story completely upside down? The were digging their own grave. This should be buried deep into the archives and never brought back, not on bluray, online, not even here.

I cannot begin to fathom how they thought it'd be a good idea. It was so incredibly ham-fisted and poorly handled that it's shocking that it took an outside view to come out and tell the emperor he was naked. It almost seems as though that many of the crew just blindly agreed so as not to rock the boat.
>>
>>81507149

Well, I mean, it is a cool story, and definitely poignant and probably could be done interestingly. I could see how writers and animators would be willing to do it.

Until someone reminded them that part of the objective was not only to make a good story in a vacuum, but also make people love Zootopia. And nobody could love a place like that. Zootopia in that movie was the villain, and it was a much nastier, eviler villain than most.
>>
>>81507550

It never has to be so black/white. You can love a city that's been cruel to you all your life. It's an organic relationship that throws objectivity out the window.

That's something a lot of people who've never lived in cities just don't get.
>>
>>81507605
>You can love a city that's been cruel to you all your life.

Maybe, but why would you want to? Especially when they're busy cheering that their sports team is doing so great this year and all you're hoping for is a freak injury mid-game to brighten up your week.

What kind of parents would Nick and Judy be? Who would watch the kids while they're at work?
>>
>>81508011
Nick, without question. Judy's the more helicopter Mom style considering how much of a career woman she is, but I see Nick being a 100% reliable stay-at-home Dad.
>>
>>81508064
>wanting a future where they aren't still cop partners
>>
>>81508011
Judy would be the one who would sign her kids up for all kinds of activities, make sure they always have something to do and generally be a helicopter mom.

Nick would be the lazy weekend dad, preferring to let his kids learn from their own mistakes.
>>
>>81508011
I sort of see an unclear dichotomy between them. Nick is a fun loving parent but the first one to get wary when the kids might be doing something dangerous (including dating) but he wears his heart on his sleeves for his kids, happy to have a full family in his life.

Judy is pretty laid back about letting kids learn on their own from her growing up with more mischief makers than supervisors, but she'd always want to push her kids to do their best in everything. She's a bit less lovey dovey compared to Nick when it comes to the kids and less prone to getting emotional. She would rib Nick on this role reversal to no end.

To watch the kids in their absence, Nick calls on his old pal Honey, trusting her insane paranoia and tendency to stay in a bunker to keep their kids safe.

Judy asks Fru Fru or one of countless siblings. Or her parents. End point is she wouldn't be so quick to trust Honey with the kids after they began getting all leery about sheep.

There's another does of your advanced, autism cancer for today, anons.
>>
>>81508073
Fuck no, I still want them to be cop partners, I was just answering the question individually to J and N.

If they had a kid in the storyline? I could see the kids being raised by the police station, with Clawhauser being their hilarious big gay uncle, and Bogo being that one relative that everybody hates but secretly gives them candy and shit when nobody's looking because he's a sucker for kids in a totally not-Chris Hansen sort of way.

I would've loved to see to old version since I kinda miss the old darker animated films, but I'm also wondering what the hell they were thinking. It's obvious the anyone who hears about it that it's far too dark to become a Disney film in 2016. I don't understand how the shock collar idea wasn't shot down immediately, it's insanely brutal.
And the absolutely awful thing about it is that they went to production with this weird incomplete idea they weren't sure about. This huge last minute change they did? All on the backs of the poor production team which now had to do insane overtime for the movie to be done on time.

The documentary shows that the production of the movie was troubled, but it was probably a lot more troubled than it lets on.

I wouldn't say so actually. Working countless hours, having to put overtime (paid I hope, but probably not) and sacrifice your free time and time with your family just because the clowns at the management can't be fucking decisive about the story, it just sucks, even if the pride in helping to make a successful movie is great.
I've seen someone who worked in one of the big studios rant about this issue, that it's becoming too commonplace for Disney and other big studios to do this sort of thing. They enter production way too early to make it to the deadline and then stuff like this big rewrite happens and everyone has to work extra.

This film makes me so empty inside. I was reminded there is place for love, integrity and trust, righting old wrongs and becoming a better person.
Despite all the subtexts I find the film very cute, sweet and innocent - I'm not even ignoring adult themes, it's just like my brain switches off and I see things pure and simple as they were when I was little.

if Finn was dressed up as an elephant and Nick was pretending he's his son and the story seemed not to raise any questions, does this mean in mixed-species relationships an offspring would be that of mother's species?
>>
>>81509588
Questions weren't raised because people saw a fox claiming to be the father of a little fox dressing as an elephant, not a fox claiming to be the father of a little elephant.

The very definition of species separation is when two individuals cannot produce [viable] offspring.
