I was pondering this after seeing the movie a couple nights ago. Is Nick's smugness so likable and relateable due to it being a defense mechanism created after a traumatic event he suffered as a child? In fact, it could be argued that many cliche character traits could become valid and well thought out if created as a consequence of a character's past experiences, instead of just being inserted for the sake of having a personality?

>>81195371I'm more focused on hoping those little jerks' scout group was dismantled by the headquarter right after coming to know what they did to a newcomer.
>>81195371Well, maybe.
Holy fuckThis film is good. And the first draft was ALSO good. And we're never gonna see it. But I can't get over it. I can't stop thinking about it- They've created a world with such incredible story telling opportunities.
>>81198867Is calling a movie like this out on using coincidence to build suspense a fair criticism? Because there are three separate parts of the movie that rely on coincidence to make sense, and Idk if that's supposed to be "the joke" or not.1. Hopps getting iced by the Godfather if not for her daughter walking in just in time to save her. This one seems funny until it becomes a plot point later on for solving the case.2. The driver turning right before Hopps get the vital info. That timing is just incredibly convenient, and I doubt intentionally so due to the fact that Hopps showing up at the train station later was a surprise to them.3. The phone call after Hopps finds out there's a giant coverup. They could have just slipped out, but her phone conveniently goes off just at the wrong time to create suspense.
>>81195371It's not that they become more or less "valid" or "well thought out", they want the character to be relatable and understandable, while giving a reason why he acts the way he does.
>>81195371Looking this deep into yet another talking animal children's cartoon. OP why are you so fucking autistic?
>>81199094What you're attempting to describe is plot contrivance. And only your first point really holds up as an example of it. When Manaches turns, we don't know why at first, so that's just another layer of the mystery narrative. Later we find out why he was turned, and how, in a way that actually explains the timing of it rather well.Your third point is just petty and pedantic. Everyone has their parents call them at inconvenient times, or forgets to silence their phones some time they should have.
>>81199094While I think every single one of those ultimate just ends up being for a joke and to push the plot along, they would likely have done things a little different if not for some coincidences. Like while he is a mob boss, Mr. Big seems mostly reasonable. He knew Nick well enough that they buried his grandmother in a rug they had him make. He also went out of his way to try and help his florist of all people. I figure if the godmother thing hadn't come up Judy would have just talked to Mr. Big explaining how she was just trying to find all these missing predators and keep the town peaceful. He could have respected that and helped her. Manches turning wasn't a coincidence. Doug shot him right after they were done talking to him. I guess it could take varying times for different animals, but it doesn't seem that odd. Phone call yeah, that was convenient and likely just for the "you got a call at a really bad time" gag. I think a more convenient thing is the night howlers being blue, them using little blue pellets, and Nick getting a love for blueberries all in the last 20 mins or so. Bellwether even mentions she'll dart every predator in town, but they're paintball pellets, not darts. That bugged me. It was all to set the ending and fake out up but I think it could have been done better. >>81199307I know there are people out there who will laugh or say I'm full of shit, but Zootopia for all its cuteness and the lively colorful world, is a rather mature story. It feels like it's a story more people from kids to adults should be discussing.
If there's a sequel I'd be happy with the ending just being Judy and Nick having a nice candlelight dinner together where the movie fades as they're about to kiss. Just something that's official. This really shouldn't matter to me as much as it does that these two get together. I think I'm broken.
His smugness is so relatable because we're all beta males who wish we could be as smooth as Nick.
>>81199735I think it's relatable because it's all a mask. Sure he's really good at it, and it's likely just a habit and a part of him now, but deep down it's not what he had wanted. He built it up over what he'd lost. It's another reason I want Nick and Judy together. Judy kind of saved Nicks soul, in a sense. Gave him back what he wanted years ago, just in a different form.
>>81195371That's, like, plot, dude. That's just plot in general.Basic storytelling.Nothing fancy there.
I'm trying to find Nick's tie, but I can't really find anything that has the exact color scheme of it.I can find a million navy-blue ties with red stripes, but Nick's tie also has blue stripes along the sides of the red stripes, and I'm having trouble finding a tie with that kind of pattern, in the right colors. The closest one I found did have blue stripes around the sides of the red stripes...but it's two different shades of blue stripes, and one of them is too bright, making it look like a white stripe.http://i.imgur.com/oe4ySVP.jpgShould I just get navy with red stripes, and skip the extra blue stripes? You can't really see the blue stripes in the animation unless you look closely, so I figure most people won't care.

>>81201714Wow, that's a lot of fics. Any of those stand out as your favorite?
>>81199094>>81199595It bothered me too. While I thought the story was pretty good for a Disney children's movie, it had way too many coincidences and contrivances in it. Using a few coincidences here and there in a story is okay, but it's best to avoid them as much as possible. If there's some kind of big mystery, the heroes should be able to solve it without the help of perfectly timed coincidences.I had a similar problem with Jessica Jones, only there the coincidences generally screwed things up for the heroes, and it got to a point where the heroes were so unlucky it was rididulous
>>81201792I suppose I like Sunlight City and Prejudice Dies Hard most personally, though neither are very light.A lot of people like Sadjudy, and I'm liking the sequel so far.Hood and Hunted are generally lighter fair if you want that.

>>81199094>>81199530The plot in Zootopia hinges on a lot of apparent coincidences that really aren't coincidences when you think about it. And most of them point right back to Dawn Bellwether:>Judy becomes the first rabbit cop in Zootopia, and immediately gets assigned to the high-profile "downtown" unit. She probably owes both of these to Bellwether pushing Mayor Lionheart's "inclusion" policies to the limit.>Judy nearly gets fired for volunteering to take on the Otterton disappearance case, but Bellwether intervenes and puts Chief Bogo in a position where he has to permit it.>Judy gets attacked by the savage Manches, which if not for Lionheart's wolves kidnapping him would've exposed the supposed "predators turning savage" epidemic. Clearly Bellwether had her followed by her henchsheep just to set the encounter up.The whole first 3/4 of the movie is Bellwether using Judy as a pawn to advance her "race war" scheme. From the moment she passed police academy she was being groomed to play the part she ended up playing in her disastrous news conference.

>>81195371It could very well be a defense mechanism. Nick is a wounded soul with a thick skin protecting it. He drops his defenses with Judy and exposes himself. Judy inadvertantly pokes at the old wound and Nick overreacts as a result. It's very human. In the very anti-human art world we live in today, I'm amazed a movie like this made it to theaters and am very pleased at how well it has been doing. People crave human stories even if told by funny animals and human stories involve tragedy, humor, and don't always work out perfectly.

>>81207492So find a friend and play the song together.
>>81207210Yes, Inside Out had one or two good feelsy moments, which make you forget that the rest of the film is rather bland.
>>81206001Went as a group of three ugly dudes ranging from 32 to mid 40s. Nobody cares you paranoid idiots.
>>81207573It actually doesn't look quite as impossible as some of these other videos.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5AFCu02xbNcWhich are then practiced until mastered.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OyUJnV2R-5g
>>81207692I think the problem is the chords might be too far apart to actually play with just two hands
How could they make an animated fox so objectively attractive?
>>81207511Newer Pixar films have one or two good scenes that tug at your heartstrings, which make people forget about the rest of the film being dull and bland. See: Up, Inside Out, Toy Story 3, The Good Dinosaur.
>>81207511It handled the concept of depression accurately, where it's not just about being sad all the time but rather, feeling nothing. I also liked the message that being sad was healthy and that it's impossible to be happy all the time. The execution was alright, and it was certainly better than the last few Pixar movies. Zootopia is a much better film in my opinion though.
>>81207839I agree for the list, except Inside Out, really I watch this movie twice, and except boredom and complete hate for the characters, I haven't feel anything from this movie
>>81207839I saw Up and Toy Story 3, and was disappointed enough with the heartstring-tug scenes in those that I haven't watched a Pixar film since.
Do you think, Zootopia will reach at least Inside Out?
>>81207974I fucking hate Up because of this. It's clearly trying to be upsetting and the rest of the movie feels cheap and generic in comparison. It's a god damn shame it got the Oscar over the likes of Coraline, Fantastic Mr. Fox, The Secret of Kells, and The Princess and the Frog.
>>81208069Worldwide? Yes.Domestic? No.
>>81208069What are the chances that it beats Minions worldwide? That would make me so happy.
>>81207839I do think up is slightly better than the others in that regard. You have some callbacks later on, the ellie badge scene, looking at the house and it ended out resting in the exact spot it was supposed to from the painting, you've got some character development from carl through the whole thing, it's nice (even if the the middle of the movie is just kind of dumb)Toy story 3 I felt like I was watching a dreamworks movies at certain points, all the ken doll stuff for example, like where he's doing a fashion show and the funky music is playing. It was like what, I wasn't expecting this. Then you have the trash compactor scene that everyone says made them cry and I was just like ok. I suppose I shouldn't use dreamworks as an insult, HTTYD1/2 are way better than the average pixar movie now.
>>81208241Every time I see one of those yellow pills I die a little inside
>>81208069Also why don't we know what the production budget was for Zootopia yet?
>>81204190From what book is that picture from?
>>81207947Being sad is awesome. There are fewer things in life better than a good cry.
>>81208354I haven't had a good cry in a long time. Feels bad.
>>81208322http://www.nytimes.com/2016/03/07/arts/zootopia-tops-the-box-office.html?_r=0roughly $150m
>>81208254The compactor scene was supposed to make people cry? I thought it was just there to be a memorable visual, and that Andy giving toys to the little girl was supposed to be the melancholy part. Offhand, these are the pretty much the only parts of the movie I remember, that plus something about Buzz getting reset.
>>81208354Being sad sucks. Being perpetually sad sucks at least. Its just dull and stressful. No catharsis, just constant bleh.

>>81208458So every other movie managed to earn more than at least double their budget (and Minions earned nearly 5x its own). What do you think the odds are that Zootopia can manage that after its opening in Japan and the other markets it hasn't reached yet?

>>81208123Pixar are the masters of Oscar-baiting. If they were live action films critics would be ripping them to shreds for emotionally manipulating their audiences, but because they're animated movies - and to critics that means "for kids" (just like to critics it seems like comic book movies = funny and fun) - they aren't just given a pass, they're praised.Toy Story 3 is the worst example of this, because 3/4 of it is a rehash of Toy Story 2, but the last half-hour or so is filled with so much nostalgic pandering and emotional manipulation it left critics calling it the "greatest animated film of all time", etc. As a result, 2010 - which featured some great animated films like Tangled and, my personal favorite film of all time, How to Train Your Dragon - were thrown to the side so everyone could kiss Pixar's ass. Up was the same way. Whenever someone praises it it is for the first nine minutes - but what about the last 90 minutes or so? It's like the entire film is good-not-great, but because of that opening people are quick to throw praise upon it.Someone had a great way of describing those supposed Pixar "masterpieces" like Wall-E, Up, and Toy Story 3: basically they are fantastic, emotional animated shorts that are stretched to a feature length by padding those one or two great scenes with generic pap that no one remembers.
>>81208812The way they made the environment look super realistic, then using highly stylized character designs was a massive mistake, it looked so wrong. And making the human kid acting like a dog was dumb as well, they really need to stop with the "everything acts like a dog" thing, Frozen did it as well.
itt: manchildren overthinking another pretty good disney film as if it was the new godfather or something
>>81208959>tfw I remember people trying to defend Pixar putting cartoony characters in hyper realistic environment as some kind of 'symbolism' for characters 'not being in their element'Pixarfags are obnoxious as fuck
>>81208069>minions>that successfulSEEING RED AGAIN!!!

I like the direction this thread is heading.
>>81208854>basically they are fantastic, emotional animated shorts that are stretched to a feature length by padding those one or two great scenes with generic pap that no one remembersThis must explain why the only praise I hear for Up - and I mean that really, I hear not a word for the rest of the movie - is for that tear-jerking introduction sequence. Sure, it was sad, but it just feels so damn cheap when you put the huge remainder of the movie in perspective. I ask for praise about the movie in full and no one can give me any apart from the introduction. The same goes for Toy Story 3 - my mom and sister went out to see it and praised the emotional scenes very highly, but I didn't hear much else about the rest. Was it even worth remembering?
>>81209189What, the patriotism or the discussion of films and such?
>>81208354that's not real sadness, i used to feel like that when i was 16 a lot of times. It's a healthy feeling but actual sadness feels bad man.
>>81209258I liked it when Tim Allen spoke in Spanish.
>>81209149>Dat weekend drop though
>>81209373The patriotism of course. Zootopia is a national treasure and the most American film of the century.
>>81195709
>>81209258Exactly. You're saying what I'm saying, and clearly I'm not the only one thinking it.People praise Up's opening sequence and remember nothing else (except, maybe, "Squirrel!")People praise Toy Story 3's ending, but remember nothing else about the movie. (and if they did - they'd know Lotso was basically Stinky Pete 2.0)Meanwhile you have a movie like How to Train Your Dragon where you have, just off the top of my head: Hiccup and Toothless' first encounter, the forbidden friendship scene, the sequence where Hiccup masters the dragon training, Hiccup and Toothless' "test drive", the romantic flight, Stoick disowning Hiccup, Hiccup waking up and realizing he lost his leg -- one of the most ballsy and mature moves in any "family" animated film, etc.I actually think Zootopia has a screenplay that is far more balanced and just better written than the above movies -- and I say this as someone who thinks modern Disney is generally overrated. It deals with complex themes and issues, and the emotional scenes don't feel forced. It's just a great film overall.
>>81209725I remember Buzz being an exaggerated Antonio Banderas.
>>81209056>Implying Zootopia is not a masterpiece of the Animation in general
>>81209482>Zootopia is a national treasure and the most American film of the century. How shallow culture has to be to take that much pride in mere (good, but still) CG animation.
>>81209789The most obnoxious exaggerated Antonio Banderas, ever.
>>81208812Good Dinosaur had the same problem as Brave - It was unfocused. You could tell that there were multiple ideas and the writers couldn't decide which story they wanted to do.Zootopia, in contrast, really blew me away with how tight it was. It's tied with the first HTTYD in that aspect. When I found out the story had been completely re-done a year before release I was blown away.

>>81207839>Up>dull and bland
>>81210012Listen here, you pinko commie, you think you can just badmouth the greatest country in the world? Zootopia exemplifies the principles so many patriots over the centuries have fought and died for - equality and liberty for men and animals. Of course, I wouldn't expect a pinko commie like yourself to understand anything about wholesome American values.
>>81204754I remember seeing it a while ago.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rjMGV4S7Hu0
>>81208854It really sucks when you compare it to Pixar's older films.I mean, the first two Toy Story films, Monsters, inc., Finding Nemo, and the Incredibles were all great films.Shit, despite the crap they get, I actually thought the first Cars and A Bug's Life were pretty good films, flawed as they might have been.It may be the nostalgia talking, but the newer Pixar films just feel...mediocre.

>>81210593Because back then they actually made movies with an aim towards just telling good stories. Now they go out of their way to please critics and Academy voters through emotional pandering -- to the point where one of their latest feelings literally had emotions as characters. The only solace is that I think they're done quality-wise. Look at their line-up... almost nothing but sequels - most of which aren't even needed. I mean... who the FUCK thought it would be okay to green-light a fourth Toy Story film? Then again I personally think the existence of TS4 is meant just to act as a middle finger at DreamWorks since Pixar put it only a few weeks outside of the release of How to Train Your Dragon 3... then when HTTYD3 was pushed back to 2018 Pixar pushed TS4 back to 2018 -- seems like their way of trying to assert dominance since the third Toy Story film came out the same year as the first HTTYD.

>>81199094It's because the plot is super rushed. Like all Disney movies since Wreck It Ralph, it seems that the writers had a lot to tell but so little time, so everything in Zootopia happens super fast and super convenient. The 48 hours thing seems like an excuse to rush the plot. This is why there are so many characters that seem interesting and get super featured in the trailers, but show up for like five lines. They developed the world more than they polished the story.I don't doubt that they could tell a coherent story if they wanted, but Zootopia alone could have easily been a 12 episode season.

>>81215808Look for the one with "HDCAM.XVID.AC3.HQ.HIVE-CM8.avi" it represents the best of them (still, camrips are poor) decently centered, no camera shake, and the camera guy isn't sniffing every 10 sec or moving the camera like the one in .mkv format. A 3rd camrip looks pretty clear but was filmed at a stupid angle to the screen (facepalm).
>>81208069Keep in mind that Zootopia is only in its third weekend and has held pretty strong at the box office so far. If it stays in theaters as long as those other films, it'll probably wind up about second place on that list. Zootopia doesn't have any competition for a while yet; between that and how good it is at holding onto its audience so far, I think it has a pretty good shot of doing just that.
>>81216229I'd say it's a sure thing that most of the people involved with the movie want a sequel to happen. What isn't a sure thing is if they will be able to actually make it.

As long as you don't accept complacency and either get stuck in "I suck, fuck it." or "I'm hot shit, fuck everyone else my stuff is golden they just don't GET it" you will eventually get there.

>>81217918I suppose it's different depending on the animal. With animals like dogs and cats and such the head typically grows out of the body and is just as wide, if not wider than the shoulders. With smaller or more graceful or feminine characters, the neck has a pretty deep curve.I would advise in your next rough, draw more curving lines before solidifying your skeleton. IE: Instead of, say, one line for the top part of the arm, and another for the bottom part, just draw one curving line. You'll be right m8 just keep at it.

Some guy in a newer thread was wondering how a Zootopia adaption of L.A. Noire would play out, but it was deleted. Here's what I thought about it:>Detective Nick Wilde, ZPD, Badge 2600>recently moved to the Zooicide bureau>investigates the death of a woman, seems to involve a blunt weapon>goes back to station to interrogate a suspect>suspect replies to some answers>dialogue wheel says "Doubt">Wilde thinks he's going to say something along the lines of "I don't believe you">dialogue starts>"You're full of shit, Jacob. The truth is you hated that bitch. You followed her and dragged her into your car and then took her out to the Moors. She woke up and you smashed her face in with a socket wrench, and then you stomped her. You stomped her because she's a drunken whore and she treated you like shit. You stomped her for all the years you had to take it. You stomped her because you are such a weak fucking sister, Jacob, and you wanted to erase all memory of it. Go on. Try to deny it.">suspect starts uncontrollably crying>dialogue wheel gives Wilde 4 new options>wants to console him because he didn't see it coming that he would flip out like that>pick [Glass Him] to give him a drink>Wilde picks up a cola bottle and smashes his face in>guy drags himself across the ground screaming for help >choose dialogue option [Help Him]>Wilde starts screaming "Oh I'll help you alright." walks up to him and stomps the shit out of his back and breaks his legs >Hopps looks at the guy and says some cheesy line along the lines of "Guess this will make BREAKING NEWS when they find his corpse">choose dialogue option "Very funny" >Wilde says "Fuck you"
